Spaghetti Muscle Model

This document provides instructions for creating a "spaghetti muscle model" to demonstrate the anatomy of individual muscles at the microscopic level. Students will work in pairs to fill straws with spaghetti to represent muscle cells, bundle the straws together and wrap them in plastic to represent different muscle layers, and place the bundles in a freezer bag to illustrate a whole muscle and tendon. The goal is for students to understand how the materials in the model correspond to different muscle structures.

Spaghetti Muscle Model

Lab Objective:
To understand the anatomy of the individual muscle by creating it at the microscopic level.

Materials:
15 pieces of spaghetti
15 straws
1 sheet of plastic wrap
1-quart size freezer bag
clear tape
marking pen

Strategy:
You will be grouped with a partner for this activity.
Be sure that you follow the instructions thoroughly.

Each partnership will be given spaghetti and about 10-20 straws.

You will first fill the straws with the spaghetti.

The straw represents the endomysium the covering of the individual muscle cell.
The spaghetti inside the straw are the myofibrils.

Using the marker, you can make dark lines on the spaghetti to represent the myofilaments.

Next, wrap five or six straws with plastic wrap representing the perimysium.
These are bundled together to represent the muscle bundles or fascicles.

Finally, you will place two or three in a freezer bag. This represents the outer most covering of the muscle the
epimysium.
Pulling the end of the bag and twisting creates the appearance of the tendon that attaches the muscle to the bone.
You will place clear tape just above the twist to secure the muscle bundles inside the bag.

Draw and label your model below. Be sure you are clear about labeling and identifying which material(s) represent
which part of the muscle.
