INTRODUCTION
The purpose of
this procedure is
to cover
GENERAL METHOD
STATEMENT 
 for theMannar,
Thoppuwa and
Udappuwa
Bridges
Construction
works that shall
be carried outby
CEC - Sanken Joint
Venture.
This appendix
provides an
outline of typical
construction
methods and
discuss the
sitework
procedures
according to the
Master
Programme.The
Contractor shall
provide all
labour,
equipment,
materials and
incidentals
required tosupply
mix, transport,
and place all
ready mix and/or
cast in situ
concrete and
installmiscellane
ous related items
including forms,
sleeves, anchor
bolts &
embedded
itemsas required.

3.1
TEMPORARY
OFFICE
FACILITIES
Preliminary
activities include
the setting up of
the contractor’s
compounds and
office for 
 the contractor
and Engineer.O
ffice facilities
shall be provided
to Employer/Engi
neer’s
representative
according to the
project
specification by
the contractor.
Temporary office
facilities shall
include
stationery,office
items and
sanitary facilities.
Contractor’s
office facilities
will be
constructed near
the site premises
as per the
requirements. In
addition stores
and yard will be
utilize at the
same place. As
well as
sanitary facilities
will be included
to Contractor’s
office facilities.
 Contractor will
be provided
sanitary facilities,
rest area and
lunch room for
the workers.
3.2
TEMPORARY
FENCING
The land area
occupied by the
permanent works
will be identified
accurately on
theground, by
surveying and
installing
appropriate pegs
and posts, prior
to
the workscomme
ncing. The area
defined will be
the area of land
acquired through
the
Employer.This
will involve
the installation
of temporary
fencing erection
surrounding the
acquiredland.
Fence material
such as fence
post, barb wires
will be delivered
to the site.
Somefence may
require a
concrete
foundation.
3.3 SETTING
OUT
The contractor
shall set out the
bridge or other
involved works
after clearing the
siteand get
the same
approved by
Client
Representative.
It shall be the
responsibility of
theContractor to
install substantial
reference marks,
bench marks
etc. and maintain
themas long
as required by
the Client
Representative.
The contractor
shall assume
fullresponsibility
for proper setting
out, alignment,
elevation and
dimension of
each and
allParts of the
work.

In addition, prior
install the Bailey
bridge,
contractor shall
set out the Bailey
bridgelocation
and the
abutment
locations. The
approach road
shall be set out
thereafter.Accord
ing to the Bailey
bridge location,
approach road
shall be match
with the
Baileybridge. If
there need any
backfilling work
near the
abutment,
contractor shall
responsibleto do
backfilling work.

villagers,

neighbours. This
bypass road shall
be maintain by

3.5
PHOTOGRAP
HIC SURVEY /
CRACK
SURVEY
Contractor shall
responsible to
mitigate the
damages to the
surrounding
buildings
orhouses during
the construction
period. Prior
commencement
the site activities
crack
survey shall
be done with
the Engineer’s
representative
and contractor’s
environmental
officer. All cracks
and damages
shall be notified
during the crack
survey and
submit thephoto
log to the
Employer/
Engineer.
3.6 EXISTING
BRIDGE
DEMOLITION
After completion
of Bailey bridge
installation
contractor shall
eligible for
demolition
ofexisting bridge.
The existing
bridge shall be
demolish in two
way.A) Diamond 
wire sawingB) Ex
cavator Breaker /
Hydraulic
BreakerAbove
two methods are
allowable.Howev
er, after
completion of
demolition
works, Debris
shall be removed
from the site to
disposal yard as
instruction by the
Engineer. When
the demolition is
going on, don’t
allow
to come inside
the site for
strangers. Safety
officer will be
responsible for
the any
riskyactivities
and work permit
will be submitted
to Employer by
the HSO.
3.7
CONSTRUCTI

NECESSARY
COFFERDAM
OR
SHORING WO
RKS
Construction of
cofferdam or
shoring works
shall be done on
initial stage by
thecontractor.
Contractor shall
prepare the shop
drawing for the
construction
of cofferdamand
it shall be
submitted to
Employer/Engine
er for the
approval prior
start the work.(If
the Employer/En
gineer has any
other opinion
than contractor
for the
cofferdam,Emplo
yer/Engineer
shall note on the
log book
regarding that or
Employer/Engine
er shallgive it by
letter.)

This will be
helpful to
proceed piling
works very
easily. Steel
sheet pile shall
be
drivensurroundin
g the Pile cap/
Abutment Base.
Each sheet pile
shall be locked
together to
theprevent the
water leakage in
to the base
location. After
completion of
shoring
worksdewatering
shall be started
as soon as
possible. As well
as Care shall be
taken toremove
the mud and
loose material
from the pile
locations after
completion
of cofferdam.
3.8 PILE BED
PREPARATIO
N
Pile bed
preparation shall
be done prior
commencement
the piling works.
Contractor
shallresponsible
to prepare the
proper bed for
the piling works.
Care shall be
taken to keep
awater pump
inside the shoring
location if
necessary or
where necessary
to
dewateringworks.
Purpose is pile
bed will
make access for
the pile machine
to the pile
location without
anydisturbance.
3.9 BORED
PILE CASTING
AND TESTING

(B21).Bored piles
shall be done by
the approved and
licensed
contractor.
Employer
andEngineer
shall be
recommended
bored
pile contractor
prior
commencement
the work.Setting
out the bored pile
locations and
reference points
shall be install
each
locations.Perman
ent bench mark
and references
point shall be
concrete and
stable.Employer/
Engineer shall be
approved each
reference points
prior start drilling
works.The drilling
process will be
continued to the
designed
founding depth or
to
theCommencem
ent of rock head
level by using
augers and
drilling buckets.At
the point of
encountering the
rock head level,
for examples,
where the
soildrilling tools
are unable to
penetrate the
strata any further,
boring shall
cease in order
that the client’s
representative
may verify
the occurrence
and confirm the
rock socketing
criteria.For
drilling through
rock, rock drilling
tools shall
be applied. This
shall includerock
auger, core
barrels, (round
shank, roller
bit) cross cutters
and
whereNecessary
, chisels.
The final toe level
of the pile shall
be verified by the
client’s
representative. A
 Detailed record
of all
encountered
ground
conditions
together with the
associated
timesand t
ype of equipment
and materials
used will be
recorded in the
‘Pile Bore Log.

Upon reaching
the final depth,
loose and
remolded
material and
debris will be
Removed using
‘cleaning bucket’.
The cleaning
bucket is a
specially design
flat
 bottombucket
which will pick up
all the loose
material at the
bottom of the
hole. The base
of thehole shall
be checked by
the measuring
the depth of the
base.Wash
boring,
installation of
temporary
casing,
Installation of
steel cage,
concrete
castingand
testing shall be
done by the
bored pile
contractor. All
laitance shall be
removed fromthe
site
after completion
of boring. It shall
be cross check
by the
environmental
officerduring the
boring.Cross
hole sonic
logging test will
be done within 10
days no sooner
than 3 days.
3.10 CONCRE

of pile hacking
works, screed
concrete (Grade
15) shall be
done.Therefore
prior start screed
concrete, bed
preparation shall
be done the
manually.
Shallbe removed
all loose
materials and
mud from the
screed
location.After 1, 2
days rebar could
be laid on the
screed for the
reinforcement
works of
Abutmentbase.
In the same time
dowel bars shall
be kept for
the abutment
wall and wing
wall.Ready mix
concrete will be
place to the
Abutment base
as
specification.Abut
ment wall and
Wing wall could
be casted 2 times
up to bearing
pad.
MaximumConcre
te casting height
shall be 2.4 m as
per BS 8110.
Dowels shall be
kept to theBallast
Wall, Curtain
Wall and Rest of
wing wall. Prior
casting bearing
pad, 200mm
lengthstainless
steel dowels shall
be kept as per
the drawing.

dowels will be
anchorto the
precast beam
stop moving or
shifting the
