Equation of a Circle
PART I.
MELC 10: Illustrates the center-radius form of the equation of a circle

A. Introduction and Discussion

This module was designed and written for a learner like you. It was developed to help you learn the
center-radius form of the equation of a circle.

The first lesson of this module focuses about the center-radius form of the equation of a circle. While
going through with this lesson, you are expected to:
1. illustrate the center-radius form of the equation of a circle if the center of a circle is at the origin
and at the point (h,k);
2. write the equation of a circle in center-radius form (standard form) given the center and radius of
a circle; and
3. write the equation of a circle from standard form to general form and vice-versa.

The Standard Form of the Equation of a Circle

The standard form also known as Center-Radius form of the equation of the circle is in the form (𝒙 − 𝒉)𝟐 +
(𝒚 − 𝒌)𝟐 = 𝒓𝟐 , with the center being at the point (𝒉, 𝒌) and the radius of 𝒓 units. The values of h and k indicate
that the circle is translated h units horizontally and k units vertically from the origin. There are two cases on
how to find the equation of a circle where in the center and the radius are given.

The General Form of the Equation of a Circle

Equations of circles are often found in the general form 𝒙𝟐 + 𝒚𝟐 + 𝑪𝒙 + 𝑫𝒚 + 𝑬 = 𝟎, where C, D, and

Note:
• It is important to identify the coordinates of the center and the length of the radius
of a circle to illustrate the standard form of the equation of a circle.
• Expanding squares of binomials and completing the squares are very essential in
converting the equation of a circle in standard form into general form and vice-
versa.
