Chapter 1 General Description

1.11 Features
Model HM-200 H.F. mobile X-ray machine is designed for radiography diagnosis for patients in
serious conditions or those unable to move. It can be used in the emergency rooms, operation
rooms, quarantine rooms or wards of hospitals, and also serve as standby equipment in
conventional X-ray checking, satisfying the needs of different aspects.

This product consists of a mobile carriage (including control console), a X-ray tube and a
collimator. With the high-frequency inversion power supply and micro-processor control, it is
applicable to the power source with high internal resistance and sockets for public power supply
available in normal wards. Moreover, with tube and oil box separated high voltage generator and
mobile carriage, this machine is compact and easy for operation. The cantilever for the X-ray tube
provides neutral balance, which is safe and reliable. The unit moves easily and facilitates location.
The X-ray tube rotates around an axis based on the two directions perpendicular to the X-ray
beam, facilitating multi-directional irradiation. Furthermore, the tube may rotate horizontally
around the brace, meeting the needs of the customers at the maximum.

Compared with single-phase X-ray generator, the high-frequency X-ray generator has constant
DC for its output high voltage, which substantially increases the effective X-ray dosage during
shooting, thus providing reduced exposure time, better film imaging resolution and less dosage on
patient’s skin. In a single-phase X-ray generator, the voltage regulation is performed through
pulley autotransformer, which is a mechanical regulation process. So, when deviation occurs for
the output high voltage at the exposure moment, the pulley autotransformer can not follow and
make adjustment. On the other hand, the high-frequency X-ray generator adjusts the output
voltage by properly controlling the output level of power, which allows the adjustment during
exposure and a stable output, providing good repeatability and accuracy. This unit is completely
controlled by micro-processor: operation through kV, mA and mAs knobs, automatic interlocked
display; during the exposure, kV and mA make adjustment in line with the settings, ensuring a
stable and accurate output; and a variety of protective actions are available, ensuring a reliable
X-ray exposure, while random check and display of various faults are provided, facilitating the
maintenance and repair of the product.

2. 1.2 Working principle

2.1.2 principle::

A.HVHV circuit
High frequency inversion technology is employed. The kV value ( kV-SET ) set by the
micro-processor and the HV sampling signal(kV-SAMP)form the PWM (pulse width modulation)
control signal through the pulse width modulator, which then becomes the driving signal for power
circuit. The main inversion device is based on IPM (intelligent power module), which forms a
complete circuit through the primary side of the HV transformer. The sampling of tube voltage is
double-sided sampling, which is obtained by resistance voltage division for the HV sampling.

2.33 Wiring Description

2.3.1 Power and circuit for start/stop
When the host is connected to the grid power, the Transformer T1 of Switch board begins to
operate, and the secondary side of T1 outputs 18VAC, which turns into a voltage at about 24VDC
at the two ends of C6 after rectifying filtration. Now, the switch “I” (ON key) and “O”(OFF
key ) are open, Q3 shuts off and K3 does not work. If “I” ( ON key ) is on, K3 closes and
self-sustains, and the coil packs of K1 and K2 are energized from K3, and relays K1 and K2 close.
When K1 closes, the voltage at 220VAC is applied to the switch power, which in turn outputs the
various types of LV DC power required for the micro-processor system. When K2 closes, one
7
feeder of 220VAC goes to the LV transformer that outputs LV AC power for other circuits while
another feeder feeds the main inversion closing relay. When the self-test of the micro-processor
system shows normal, the micro-processor board PC1-6 outputs high potential, which controls the
switch board Q1 to actuate the closing of K4. After the closing of K4, the main inversion closing
relays K1 and K2 are on, beginning to charge the main inversion capacitor via R1 and R2. When
the charging of the main inversion capacitor is completed, the micro-processor board PC1-5
outputs high potential, which controls the switch board Q2 to actuate the closing of K5. After the
closing of K5, the main inversion closing relay K3 is on, providing energization of the main
inversion power. If Switch “O”(OFF key)is on, then Q3 shuts off, K3 releases, the power of the
host is disconnected and the work finishes.

2.3.2 Micro-processor control circuit

Micro-processor control chip is based on monolithic micro-processor 8031.
XT1, C1 and C2 provide an operating frequency of host at 12MHz. After switching on the unit,
energizing reset signal is generated via C5 and R1, which is sent to the 8031 reset port when
shaped by U11. Press the RES key and the micro-processor will get re-energized and reset. As
the address lines, AD0~AD7 are connected with the address latch U2, and as data lines, they
are connected respectively with U3, U4, U8 and the like. ALE controls the address latch U2,
and provides the separation of address/data.

U5 is a decoder, which outputs film selecting signal based on A8, A9 and A10 address data,
enabling the film selection of one of U6, U7, U8…….

U3 is a ROM, used to store control programs, operational constants, fixed variables and data.
The external interrupt INT0 of 8031 is used to interrupt faults, and INT1 used to interrupt
keyboard, thus reducing the circulating time of the main program, improving the monitoring
of kV and mA and the response speed of the fault protection. U13 and U15 are D/A
conversion circuits, through which the data of the tube voltage and current outputted from
the computer are converted to analog quantity, which is sent to the tube voltage regulation
and filament heating circuits. U9 is an A/D conversion circuit and has 4 input ports,
monitoring the change of kV, mA, and heating of filament.

2.3.3 Filament heating and current adjustment

The power transformer T1 outputs power at 40VAC, which feeds the filament inversion
circuit after rectified by the filament board BR1 and stabilized by the stabilizing circuit. The
AC input voltage of 18VAC serves power to the filament inversion trigger circuit after
rectified by the filament board BR2 and stabilized by N1. The filament inversion trigger
signal from the micro-processor board U16 passes to the filament board, and then goes to the
bases of Q7 and Q8 when isolated by optical couplers E1 and E2. When amplified by Q7 and
Q8, the trigger signal is transmitted respectively to the inputs of the trigger pulse
transformers T1 and T2. Each trigger pulse transformer outputs 2 trigger signals of identical
phase, and at the same time triggers the field-effect transistor diagonal to the inversion
bridge, and the trigger signals outputted by the 2 trigger transformers have a phase
difference of 180°, thus ensuring that 2 field-effect transistors on any single side will not be
switched on and short-circuited. The waveform for the 2 trigger signals is as follow:

8
U16:CA/8

U16:CB/11

The difference of the output pulse width from the inverter leads to the accompanying variation of
the energy outputted to the load from the inverter. So, the filament current may be changed by
adjusting the trigger pulse width. The control of filament current is equivalent to the adjustment of
the trigger pulse width of the filament inverter. For specific principle for adjustment, refer to the
following description of the circuit for “Tube Current Adjustment”.

2.3.4 Adjustment of tube voltage

The relationship between the voltage value set at test point “kV-SET” of the micro-processor
board and actual tube voltage is 1V≈33kV, and the voltage value at test point“kV-SAMP” is the
sampling value of the actual tube voltage. Likewise, the relationship between the sampling value
and tube voltage is also 1V≈33kV. The set value and the sampling value are sent to the input
of the pulse width modulator U14 to control the output pulse width of U14. The width of the
output pulse is proportional to the input error voltage.

In an exposure status, the digital input preset for output tube voltage of the micro-processor is
subject to D/A conversion by U13 and outputs kV set value through N1 : A and N1 : B. The
sampling voltage outputted by the tube head outputs kV feedback value through N1:C. Based on
the difference between the kV setting and kV feedback value, the control over the width of the
U14 output pulse, or the control of output power of the main inversion transformer, is provided.
With a larger width of U14 output pulse, the power outputted by the main inverter becomes larger,
and the tube current is fixed, the width of the trigger pulse is larger and the tube voltage higher.
When the actual value of the tube voltage is much lower than the setting, the width of trigger
pulse is large, increasing the kV value nearly to the set kV value. When the actual value of the
tube voltage is close to the setting, the width of trigger pulse becomes smaller, maintaining the
balance between the actual kV value and the set kV value. This completes the closed-loop
adjustment of the tube voltage.

The width of the 2 pulses from U14 are equal but the phases are 180°different. These 2 trigger
pulses will trigger the operation of the inversion bridge of the main inversion IGBT.

U14:CA/8

U14:CB/11

2.3.5 Adjustment of tube current

In the standby state, the microprocessor outputs the digital input of the filament heating, which is
outputted through N2:A,N2:B after conversion by U15 D ⁄ A and applied to the negative input

9
end of U16. The current of the primary side of the filament transformer outputted from the
filament board is sampled by R36, coupled to the micro-processor by the T3 transformer and
outputted via U17 and U19 :C and applied to the positive input end of U14. Control of output
pulse width of U16 is the control of the temperature of the filament heating. After pressing the
hand switch Step I, the micro-processor outputs the filament heating value. When the filament
heating is stabilized, press the hand switch Step II and HV circuit outputs the current for shooting.
Adjustment of the heating value outputted by the micro-processor changes the current for
shooting outputted by HV circuit. The simulated voltage value at the test point “mA-SAMP” is
the actual sampling value of the tube current. The relationship between it and the tube current is
1V≈50mA.
2.3.6 IPM trigger and inversion output current waveform
MODULⅠ:CP1/MODULⅡ:CN1

MODULⅡ:CP1/MODULⅠ:CN1

Output current

When inputted to the trigger board, 220V AC is rectified by BR1 and BR2 after transformation
by T1 transformer, filtrated by C1 and C2, stabilized by W1 and W2, and then it provides the
power for triggering the signal drive circuit. When isolated by E2 and another E2 optical
coupler, the main inversion trigger signal simultaneously triggers IGBT tube diagonal to the 2
sets of IGBT inversion angles. The same set of IGBT trigger signals outputted by E2 and E4
has a phase difference of 180°, thus ensuring that the 2 IGBT tubes of the same set will not be
short-circuited due to switching-on at the same time.
The 310VDC resulting from the rectified and filtrated 220V AC is applied to the inversion
bridge comprised of MODULⅠ and MODULⅡ. During exposure, the driven trigger pulse
signal provides alternate triggering so that MODULⅠ:A, MODULⅡ:B and MODULⅠ:B,
MODULⅡ:A are switched on by turns, generating the primary driving current of HV
transformer and leading to the production of HV at the tube head. Through the closed loop for
kV sampling, adjusting the trigger signal width will control the HV output value of the
inverter.
2.3.7 HV output and sampling of kV and mA
The driving current outputted by the IGBT inversion bridge is applied to T1 HV transformer.
AC HV output is formed at the secondary side of the HV transformer, which is applied to the
X-ray tube when octupled by D1~D8 and C1~C8, and generates X-ray radiation output during
filament heating. Meanwhile, through the sampling resistor R and kV control circuit closed
loop, the width of the kV trigger signal is adjusted to control the voltage output of the X-ray
tube. Adjustment of the width of filament trigger signal via sampling of the neutrals MA- and
MA+ and the closed loop of mA control circuit will control the output of the X-ray tube
current.
2.3.8 Radiography control
This unit is based on 2 steps of hand switch to control the shooting. When hand switch Step I
is pressed, the micro-processor conducts self-test to the circuit, and at the same time starts the
filament heating. When the self-test shows normal, and the filament heating completes, it
10
begins to wait for hand switch Step II signal. Press the hand switch II and the micro-processor
gives the order enabling main inversion trigger, which in turn begins to work, and enters the
operating status with load. If the hand switch Step II is pressed before the completion of
self-test and filament heating, exposure has to wait till the self-test and filament heating
complete.

In operation with load, the micro-processor provides sampling and monitoring of kV and mA,
ensuring that the output dosages of the tube current and voltage are accurate and stable.

2.3.9 Soft and hard ware protection

The micro-processor monitors the operating status of the unit, and provides protection during
presence of faults. During the operation of high frequency X-ray unit, the main portions subject to
control and protection are the filament heating circuit and main inversion trigger circuit in view to
prevent IGBT inversion bridge from short-circuit.

Moreover, the micro-processor provides control and detection of plenty of signals, and monitors
the operating status of the operating circuits of various portions, ensuring the normal operation of
the unit, and promptly stops the unit in case of fault and provides error information for users to
know the causes for faults.

15
After Steps 1 and 2, the unit should be in a normal no-load operation without any fault.

When the X-ray machine is installed, the inherent filtration is not less
Caution than 2.6mmAl.

In the installed X-ray machine, before its normal use, to ensure a

stable and reliable X-ray tube globe, choose exposure at small
conditions to train the tube globe, increase the kV condition from low
Warning to high level (40kV
40kV 125kV
40kV~125kV
125kV、20mA20mA 10mAs
20mA、10mAs
10mAs) at 5kV each time at
an interval of 2.5 minutes, totaling 15 exposures.

When our collimator is delivered, the lead door and lamp light are adjusted to the standard
positions, but a combined adjustment of the complete machine is required due to the accumulative
error caused by the assembling of X-ray tube assembly, spot film and other parts, and the shift of
image caused by shock during transit.

The possible problem with the collimator lies in the inconsistence of dimensions and positions
between the light radiation field and X-ray irradiation field. The adjustment method is as follows:
remove the back cover and then the light barrier hood, move the bulb fixing plate and you will be
able to adjust the dimensions and positions between the light radiation field and X-ray irradiation
field.

Disconnect the power prior to replacing the spot lamp, for

which the model should be consistent with the original lamp.
Caution

Never touch because of the high temperature on and around the

bulb. Use tools to adjust or replace the bulb, or wait till the
Caution highly heated object fully cools down before any operation.

4.3.1 Startup
Remove the power lead from before the carriage, place the plug into the suitable socket in the
ward, press the startup key “I” and the power is on. Meanwhile, the computer is energized and
reset, followed by self-check. After the self-check shows normal, “HELLO”appears to indicate
that everything is normal. After that, the kV, mA and mAs windows show “60”,“10” and “10”.
Now, it is in the standby state for shooting.

Move the machine to the bedside of the patient. The position of the machine, the height of the
cantilever for the tube head and rotational angle of the tube head should be adjusted on site as per
the clinic needs. To provide an ortho-position exposure, for instance, the tube head has to be
elevated. When the patient is lying on his back in an inclined position, it is more convenient to
place the machine at the patient’s feet. When the patient is lying horizontally on his back, it is
better to place the machine beside the patient.

To have a lateral exposure, the tube head should be lowered. The magazine should be placed
under the patient or at his side. Make sure that the focus-to-film distance is 1m by measuring with
the tape at the rear of the beam limiter. Switch on the beam limiter lamp and direct it at the
exposure portion. You may manually regulate the open and close dimension of the beam limiter,
which depends on the actual needs.

The radiation field should be selected in line with the exposure
