Ethics in Journalism
Ethics in Journalism
of print, broadcast and online media such as newspapers, magazines and books, radio, television stations,
networks,
blogs, social and mobile media.
People who gather and package news and information for
mass dissemination are journalists. The field includes writing, editing, design and photography.
•Journalism requires a discipline of mind. It requires a sympathetic understanding of mankind, and also a
cold objective analysis of how mankind meets the problem of this age. Journalism requires courage,
vitality, punctuality, objectivity and professionalism.
•The right attitude, correct attribution and lively language are important requirements of the journalist's
work.
In order for the media to serve the public well, it must be free from pressure from political and economic
forces, and must continue to obtain, keep and increase freedom in order to be trusted by the general
public.
•A journalist writes and comments on matters of public interest in a fair, accurate, unbiased, sober, decent
and responsible manner.
The responsibilities of any journalist are many and varied-social, legal, and professional.
Journalists require certain guidelines or rules, which would help them in discharging their professional,
legal and social duties properly.
A journalist must uphold and cherish the norms of ethics in order to keep the integrity of the profession
intact.
•The primary duty of a journalist is to act as an interpreter of the world around him. He observes the
events, transmits facts about the events and acts as an interpreter of these events.
Journalists ought to be vigilant to safeguard the freedom of the press and on the other, they must see that
this freedom is used and never misused, that they always act with a great sense of responsibility.
They must act with a profound sense of responsibility towards the society. His primary duty is to serve his
readers through fair, positive and timely information in a palatable, digestible and entertaining format. He
must give special attention to the deprived and the weaker sections of society and try to involve them in
the country's process of development.
Digital journalism, which partially consists of online blogging, instant news updates, live feeds and
discussions has blurred the line between ethical and unethical journalism, leaving consumers dissatisfied
and sceptical. News consumers now need to use critical thinking in order to compare credible and
dumbfounding sources.
The ethics of journalism include the principle of "limitation of harm." This may involve the withholding
of certain details from reports, such as the names of minor children, crime victims' names, or information
not materially related to the news report where the release of such information might, for example, harm
someone's reputation.
Ethical journalism entails factual information, hard evidence, opinions from all parties involved, objective
information steered away from subjectivity and outstanding grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Caselet
The proprietor of a newspaper organisation passes away. The newspaper in question carries detailed
reports on the life and times of its proprietor.on the entire front page, and even large sections of some
inside pages. News which would otherwise be very important is given secondary position in the display.
This routine continues for a couple of more days until the funeral takes place.
Do you consider this a breach of ethical conduct or not, on the part of the newspaper, to be devoting extra
space to highlight its proprietor's death; instead of fulfilling its responsibility to the public by providing
news of the day? Justify your stand.
