1. INTRODUCTION

Special education, or special needs education, is the practice of educating students

with special needs in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Special
education is the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching
procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions
designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-
sufficiency and success in school and community than would be available if the student
were only given access to a typical classroom education.

Students with special needs, such as learning differences, mental health issues,
specific disabilities (physical or developmental), and giftedness, are those whose needs are
addressed within the classroom setting. However, generally, the term "special education"
refers specifically to students with learning disabilities, mental conditions, and other
disabling conditions.

Children with special needs may have developmental delays, medical conditions,
psychiatric conditions, and/or congenital conditions. These special needs require
accommodations so children can reach their potential. No matter the reason, the special
needs designation is useful.

2. HOW CAN THE SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS FOR SPECIAL
NEEDS CHILDRE BE APPLIED IN SCHOOL?

Most of the children with special educational needs will have appropriate provision
made for them by their school, working with parents. Sometimes the special educational
needs (SEN) team may become involved in helping the school to provide the support
needed (Farwell, et al., 2007). All professionals and parents realize that students with
disabilities are human beings with a wide range of assets and limitations. Students with
disabilities are different from the normal in one or two personal dimensions such as
intelligence or achievement. The evaluation typically includes observation in the regular
classroom, review of the child’s educational history including past test scores, assessment
with standardized tests of achievement if there are discrepancies between achievement and
intellectual ability, and elimination of other possible causes of the learning problem (for
example, sensory or visual deficits).

OR DISORDER?

Does the center provide? Of course, this is because the center has provided
a variety of tools and special places for children in need such as the dining room,
sports area, sleeping area and a few more places.

In addition to providing a place for the tools needed by the center, they also
teach and take care of the children based on guidelines set according to their
respective needs.

Among some of the interesting things in the learning process is that they are
given time to sleep and they are also taught to make various activities like making
cakes and biscuits to celebrate Eid as well as other festivals. Each school week the
theme is different to prevent children from getting bored while at school.

4. COLLET INFORMATION AND EVIDENCES FROM SCHOOL
TRHOUGH OBSERVATION AND INTERVIEW:

A) Profile of School

The school that our group chose for this project is Persatuan Autism Care Centre
Labuan. It was located at no 5012, Jalan Tanjung Batu, 87000 Labuan, Wilayah Persekutuan
Labuan. Persatuan Autism Care Centre was established on 24 May 2016.

B) Reasons of why that school provides the educational for special

needs children

Persatuan Autism Care Center Labuan provides education for special needs
children because they want to teach the children on how to manage their own life, for
example, how to wear shoes properly, how to wear clothes and many more. This will
help the special needs children to manage their life properly before going to school.

C) Total number of students in disorder or giftedness

The total number of teachers in the Labuan Autism Association is around 10

teachers. For Labuan Autism Association students, there are about 70 students.

However, the majority of teachers who are in the center always change this
because there are some teachers who cannot survive due to some reasons usually, the
teachers who are nominated to teach and care for children are between 20s to 40s
because they are more experienced and believed to take care of the children.

The age of the students in the center is between 6 years to 12 years and some
even go to school then after school they are sent to the center.

D) Ratio between teacher and special need children

The ratio between teacher and special needs children is 1:3 as the teachers at
Persatuan Autism Labuan have 10 teachers while the students are 70 students. However, they
always do their best to make sure that the children feel comfortable and well -kept.

E) The education programs for special need children

The educational program provided by the Labuan Autism Care Center Association for
children with special needs is, as stated, guided by a special handbook approved by the parties
involved. The program that is often done by this center is to teach them to be independent and
do good such as giving alms and distributing to those in need.

F) Procedure or process of education

According to an interview conducted with the principal at the Labuan autism association
Procedure and process for this education is very simple this centers the majority only accepts
children with behavioral problems not those with disabilities or special needs.

The center's procedure has a fee (not specified upon request) and there are a number of
matters discussed between the manager and the child's parents. The fee depends on how long
the child comes to the center. This educational process is based on a handbook or in other
words approved by all parties involved.

Further the center provides two categories namely class A and class B where they will
go through several processes in order to observe the level of behavior of a student. Even the
center also has student termination where students who are able to go through all the
processes, they are done with will be their termination which signifies they are able to be
independent and have better behavior.

G) The requirement of gifted/special need children’s teachers

Becoming a teacher of the gifted and talented involves first obtaining a bachelor’s
degree in a specific field of instruction or in elementary or secondary education. Qualifying to
teach the gifted and talented also frequently requires a master’s degree specific to teaching
advanced learners. Gifted and talented teachers are trained to identify and select advanced
students for gifted and talented programs through conducting parent and student interviews and
administering assessments. When working with gifted students, teachers need the skills
necessary to plan and implement a challenging curriculum and must also be able to test,
assess, and grade students at their performance level. In a secondary school setting, mentoring
and advising students on career and post-secondary education choices is a common duty.

Teachers of the gifted and talented frequently work with other classroom teachers to
develop assignments for advanced students in regular classrooms. Gifted teachers must strive
to create a learning environment that is academically challenging for advanced students while
remaining appropriate to students’ behavioral development. Because of the special needs of
their students, gifted and talented teachers may meet more frequently with parents and
administrative teams to measure student progress and achievement as part of each student’s
individual education plan.

5. CONCLUSION

The survey found that there are children with special needs in mainstream classes. The
situation with the disabilities is an appreciable number of complexes, so teachers of special
needs classes had many concerns. Those teachers are inclined to be isolated in school.
However, children with special needs of all kinds at a very young age should be introduced and
integrated with mainstream 4 children, not necessarily in a school setting, but at play groups,
daycare.
