How To Perform A Factory Reset On A Cisco DCM

The document provides instructions for performing a factory reset on a Cisco Digital Content Manager (DCM) device, which restores the device to its original factory settings and removes all configuration information. A factory reset can be performed remotely through the Cisco DCM GUI or locally on specific DCM models. After a factory reset, the device's default network settings are applied and a new security setup must be configured. Any licenses installed on the device must also be reinstalled using Cisco's licensing portal.

Introduction
This document describes the steps you need to do in order to perform a factory reset on a Digital
Content Manager (DCM) device.

Background information
You need to perform a Cisco DCM Factory reset in case any of the following events occur:

● Locked out of device (user and password credentials are not available)
● On versions equal or higher than v8.5, D9900/D9901: If management IP address is not
available, and IP config tool access is not enabled on the Cisco DCM.
● Device is reused with an entirely different configuration

Warning: Before you perform a Cisco DCM factory reset, please take into account the
following considerations: After performing a Factory restart, all configuration settings,
network setting, licenses, and security settings are lost.

Note: Factory reset cannot be performed in versions lower than v8.5. If you require to
factory reset your pre v8.5 DCM unit, please contact your Cisco Technical Assistance
Center.

Remote GUI Factory Reset

Restarting the System

The Cisco DCM, IP Video Gateway Card, or IP Audio Gateway can be restarted from a remote
location using the Cisco DCM GUI.

Three different restart actions are available:

● Warm restart (device, IP Video Gateway Card, or IP Audio Gateway Card) The device or
card restarts with its previous settings.

● Cold restart (device, Video Gateway Card, or IP Audio Gateway Card)—The device or card
restarts and the previous configuration settings are lost. Performing a cold restart of the
device does not remove the security settings, the network settings of the management
interfaces of the Cisco DCM housing, and license file.

● Factory restart (device only)—The device restarts and all previous settings (even the security
settings and the network settings of the management ports of the Cisco DCM housing) and
license file are lost. The device becomes in the state as when it leaves our assembly line.
Performing a cold or factory restart can only be done using the GUI when you are logged on to the
DCM with a GUI account belonging to the administrators security group. Navigate to Cisco DCM
GUI > Help > Maintenance > Reboot, select the desired action: Warm, Cold or Factory.

Warning: Be aware that your Cisco DCM can become inaccessible over the network, after a
GUI factory reset [default IP address] and may require an on-site intervention.

License File

It is recommended to have a copy of the Cisco DCM license file and settings file in a secure place
before performing a factory reset.

DCM Configuration

In a situation where you have no more GUI access, you may retrieve the configuration from the
device, by executing the available tool on all Software releases, located under the tools directory.

A factory restart can also be done by restarting the Cisco DCM (cold or warm restart or by
powering up the device) while the Cisco DCM hardware key (with pin 1 and 4 connected to pin 6)
is plugged in into the Input/Output (I/O) connector of the Cisco DCM. When the Cisco DCM
hardware key is plugged in, this icon is displayed in the GUI header, as shown in the image.

A factory restart removes the license file and all settings from the Cisco DCM, even the security
and network settings. It can be done via the Cisco DCM GUI as explained earlier, or via a console
connection using a personal computer and a serial terminal emulator program.

1. Connect a PC to the rear USB connector of the Cisco DCM with a USB to mini USB cable,
open a terminal emulator (HyperTerminal, Tera Term, PuTTy), and configure communication:
Baud rate: 38,400/Data 8-bit/Parity-None/Stop-1 bit/Flow control-None.
2. If the Console start up screen appears, perform a factory reset.

1. Change IP address.
2. Disable the GUI.
3. Start a shell.
4. Perform a Factory Reset.
5. Enable IPsec/Security Bypass.

After a Factory Reset

D9900/D9901

After performing a factory restart on a Cisco DCM, the management ports are provided with
default network settings. These default IP settings can be found in your Cisco DCM System Guide.
Alternatively, you can contact Cisco TAC for assistance.

Lower than v8.5

There is no option for a factory reset in versions lower than v8.5, unless performed by Cisco TAC
personnel. When the DCM leaves the factory a number of default GUI and Operating System
(OS) accounts will be created by the system.

Please consult your Cisco DCM System Guide for default GUI Login account credentials.
Alternatively, you can contact Cisco TAC (Technical Assistance Center) for assistance.

You can change your Cisco DCM's management IP address via the IP Config Tool, which is by
default enabled in versions lower than v8.5.

Best practice: Once you're logged in to your DCM with the default administrator account, it is
recommended that you remove all other GUI and OS default created accounts, and generate your
own with safe credentials.

v8.5 or higher

Important: After a Factory restart, an initial security setup must be done, as no permanent default
GUI or OS accounts are be created.

Please consult your Cisco DCM System Guide for default temporary GUI Login account
credentials.

● During the initial security setup, at least one GUI account belonging to the Administrator
security group and at least one Operating System account must be created.
D9902

● When a D9902 leaves the assembly line or after a factory reset, its GUI is disabled and the
management ports are provided with default network settings.

● Before a Cisco DCM can participate in a network, its GUI must be enabled and at least one of
the management ports must be configured with the correct network settings.
● Enabling and disabling the GUI can be done by selecting the [2] option on the console menu
● You can enter [1] on Console start screen, in order to assign new IP addresses to the Gigabit
Ethernet (GbE) ports of a Cisco DCM housing

What about lost Licenses during Factory reset?

Licensing Portal

You can use the Cisco Product License Registration tool to retrieve a DCM license file via the
World Wide Web and a standard web browser. After submitting the equipment's device Host ID,
Product Authorization Key (PAK), and device validation key, a license file is returned by email or
can be downloaded.

The licensing portal is accessible by entering the following URL in your web browser:

https://tools.cisco.com/SWIFT/LicensingUI/Home.

Licenses on Cisco DCM GUI

After receiving the license file by email, the corresponding licenses can be enabled by uploading
this file via Cisco DCM GUI.

The device Host ID can be found on the Licenses page of the Cisco DCM GUI. To open the
Licenses page, navigate to the Cisco DCM GUI Menu > Configuration > License

To install the license on the Cisco DCM Licenses page, click Browse. The file upload dialog box
appears. Click Open. Select the file and click Update and OK. It takes about 15 seconds before
the new license becomes active. You can click on the Reload button for faster visualization.
