B. Answer the questions (9 points)

1 What is Linda's reason for going to this school? (1p)

She loves music and this schools curriculum is based on music.

2 What helps Linda to keep trying her best at school? Name two things. (2p)
That the music is incorporated into everything.

3 Put the lessons in order of importance. Start with the most important one (A), etc. (2p)
A music lessons B _____________________________
C _____________________________ D _____________________________

4 What is positive about the Professional Showcase lessons, according to Linda? Name
two things. (2p)
Still, it’s great preparation for the future to perform in front of an audience.
5 Why does Linda find the Group Tutor lessons important? Give two reasons. (2p)
During these lessons, we have group discussions with our tutor as well as our
classmates. We learn a lot from this interaction, more than sitting and listening to a
teacher giving a lecture. Our tutor gives us feedback on what he has observed during
our performances and helps us out with setting our next goals.

I go to music school
Test Theme 1 and 2 (inhalers) VWO 1 English

1 My name is Linda and I’m a third year student at a secondary school that specialises
in music. I play the drums and want to become a professional drummer. I’m sure that
this is the best school to prepare me to become one. Besides the standard subjects
such as maths, biology, foreign languages etc., we also have subjects that focus on
music. There are a few schools around the UK that offer a curriculum specialised in
music. If you're passionate about music, music school could be the place for you!

2 First of all, what makes my school so awesome is that all my classmates are crazy
about music too so we talk about music all day long. Besides that, the students are all
very talented so I feel challenged and motivated to give my very best. The fact that our
school’s curriculum focuses on music makes having to work on the regular subjects less
boring.

3 One of my favourite lessons is Musical History. I’m not usually into history but these
lessons have taught me a lot about how music has developed throughout the years. It's
also really interesting to learn about the role music has played in historical moments,
like during World War II. I never thought I’d be able to concentrate so well in a history
class!

4 Other lessons I’ve learnt a lot from are the Industry lessons. They have helped me
discover a lot about the music industry I didn’t know and reminded me of things I had
forgotten. To be honest, I didn’t realise how much marketing is involved in the music
industry. It's also fascinating to see how much current affairs influence the music we
listen to. I think this knowledge will really help me in my future career.

5 Last but not least, the Professional Showcase is definitely the most useful lessons we
have. We have to perform in front of our peers two times a month and this can be nerve
wracking and scary at times. Still, it’s great preparation for the future to perform in front
of an audience. When the audience is enthusiastic about our music, it’s very rewarding
to see that all our practising is worthwhile.

6 And finally, I would say that the Group Tutor lessons are the second most important
lessons and an essential part of the curriculum. During these lessons, we have group
discussions with our tutor as well as our classmates. We learn a lot from this interaction,
more than sitting and listening to a teacher giving a lecture. Our tutor gives us feedback
on what he has observed during our performances and helps us out with setting our
next goals.

7 In my next blog, I’ll be adding a clip of our upcoming event at the music hall in town.
I’m sure you’re going to love it, and who knows? It might convince you to enrol at our
school next year!

Break a leg!
