MA 3115: Problem Sheet 1: Computational Methods for PDE

1) Determine the region in which the given PDE is hyperbolic, parabolic, or elliptic, and trans-
form the equation in the respective region to canonical form.

(i) y 2 uxx − x2 uyy = 0. (vii)* uxx + (2 csc y)uxy + (csc2 y)uyy = 0.

(ii) uxx − (1 + y 2 )2 uyy = 0.
(viii) x2 uxx − 2xyuxy + y 2 uyy = ex .
(iii) xuxx − (x + y)uxy + yuyy = 0.
(iv) yuxx + 3yuxy + 3ux = 0 (ix)* sin2 xuxx + 2 sin2 xuxy + cos2 xuyy = x
(v) xuxx + uyy = x2 (x)* (xy−1)uxx −2(x2 y 2 −1)uxy −(xy+1)uyy +
(vi)* x2 uxx + 2xyuxy + y 2 uyy = 0. xux + yuy = 0.

2) Classify the given PDE as hyperbolic, parabolic or elliptic and reduce it to canonical form.
Also find the general solution of the PDE.

(i) uxx − 4uxy + 4uyy = ey . (iv)* uxx + 2uxy + uyy = 0

(ii)* uxx + uxy + uyy + ux = 0. (v)* uxx + 2uxy + 5uyy + ux = 0
(iii) 3uxx + 10uxy + 3uyy = 0 (vi) 4uxx + 5uxy + uyy + ux + uy = 2.

3) Classify the following second order PDEs :

X
(i) uxx + 2uxy − 3uyz + 5uzz = 0. (v) uxi xj = 0.
1≤i<j≤n
(ii)* uxx + 2uxy + uyy + 2uzz − (1 + xy)u = 0. n
X X
y2 (vi) uxi xi + uxi xj = 0.
(iii) uxx + 2uyz + (cos x)uz e u = coshz.
i=1 1≤i<j≤n
z 2 2 2 2
(iv)* e uxy − uxx = log(x + y + z + 1). (vii) uxx − 2x uxz + uyy + uzz = 0

4) Reduce the Tricomi equation uxx + xuyy = 0 to the following form

(i) uξη − [6(ξ − η)]−1 (uξ − uη ) = 0, for x < 0

1
(ii) uαα + uββ + uβ = 0 for x > 0

5) * Show that u(x, y) = f (2y + x2 ) + g(2y − x2 ) is a general solution of the equation
1
uxx − ux − x2 uyy = 0,
x

6) Solve the following initial value problem (IVP) for the forced wave equation

utt − c2 uxx = xet ,

u(x, 0) = sin(x), ut (x, 0) = 0.

7) * Solve the following initial value problem (IVP) for the forced wave equation

utt − c2 uxx = ex ,
u(x, 0) = 5, ut (x, 0) = x2 .

8) Solve the following problem

utt − uxx = 0 0 < x < ∞, t > 0

u(x, 0) = x2 , ut (x, 0) = 6x 0≤x<∞
2
u(0, t) = t t > 0,

and evaluate u(4, 1) and u(1, 4).

9) For the Cauchy problem

uxx + uxt − 20utt = 0 − ∞ < x < ∞, t > 0

u(x, 0) = f (x), ut (x, 0) = g(x) − ∞ < x < ∞,

first determine the general solution to the equation, then use the initial data to obtain an
analogue to dAlemberts formula.

10) Let u(x, t) be a solution of the equation utt −uxx = 0 in the whole plane. Suppose that ux (x, t)
is constant on the line x = 1 + t. Assume, also that u(x, 0) = 1 and u(1, 1) = 3. Find such a
solution u(x, t).

11) * Find the general solution of the problem

uttx − uxxx = 0 − ∞ < x < ∞, t > 0

ux (x, 0) = 0, uxt (x, 0) = sin(x) − ∞ < x < ∞.

12) Without using the d’Alembert formula find a solution u(x, t) of the problem

utt − uxx = cos(x + t) − ∞ < x < ∞, t > 0

u(x, 0) = x, ut (x, 0) = sin(x) − ∞ < x < ∞.
