Animal Farm:

Propaganda and Persuasion Presentation: Who Will Lead the Farm?

Propaganda
Propaganda is information that is spread for the purpose of promoting a cause or belief. It is dependent
on argument and highlighting facts; however, it also utilizes rumours, half-truths, lies, and deceptions to
influence public opinion. Not only is information sometimes held back, but some information is
purposefully relayed to an audience with the ultimate intention of creating an illusion. Propaganda is a
systematic effort to manipulate others’ beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, and actions through symbols, images,
words, phrases, and powerful prose.
For this assignment, you will demonstrate your knowledge of the characters in Animal Farm as well as
persuasive techniques by creating an original piece of propaganda in support of who you believe will
lead the farm into the future. In this alternate reality, old Major has just died. The farm animals have
just chased Jones off the farm. Now they are preparing for a new way of life under a new leader. Some
animals are stepping forward and preparing to earn their comrades’ trust and vote. Who will win?
The task is NOT to convince me who would be the best leader. The task is to convince me who would
win by way of their propaganda campaign. Consider: Mollie’s campaign would utilize certain
techniques and be run very differently from Clover’s chosen techniques and campaign.
Requirements:
There are three parts to this assignment:
a) Poster (Visual) – Propaganda Poster must be completed on a minimum of 8 ½ x 11 paper (or
electronic submission to my email: [email protected] ) that incorporates original and
unique image(s) and slogan(s). Colors, fonts, and overall design needs to be considered and
representative of the candidate and the campaign.
b) Commercial Broadcast (Oral) – Propaganda Commercial Broadcast will be a 1–3-minute radio
(audio only) broadcast either in role of the animal candidate, or by a fictional spokesperson
speaking on behalf of the candidate. This is to be submitted to my email: [email protected]
c) Analytic Explanation (Written) – Complete a brief explanation of your poster and broadcast.
Your explanation will consist of two parts and will rely on your knowledge of the persuasion and
propaganda techniques outlined in the videos and on the worksheet:
• Propaganda Techniques Used in Poster (1-2 paragraphs)
• Propaganda Techniques Used in Broadcast (1-2 paragraphs)
This is not an essay. Under your two subtitles – Propaganda Techniques Used in Poster and
Propaganda Techniques Used in Broadcast – make sure to address and answer the following
questions:
• What propaganda techniques did you use? How did you demonstrate these techniques?
• Why did you choose these techniques? Why are they suited to your candidate and his/her
campaign?
• Are there any disadvantages to your chosen techniques? What risks may lead to a backfiring of
your hope to win over the voters?
Your response must be typed, double-spaced, use 12-point font, Times New Roman. Submit hardcopy or
to my email: [email protected]
