Worksheet on Force-mass-acceleration Method, Dynamics//2022

1. A man pulls himself up the 15° incline by the method shown. If the combined mass of the
man and cart is 100 kg, determine the acceleration of the cart if the man exerts a pull of
175 N on the rope. Neglect all friction and the mass of the rope, pulleys, and wheels.

[Ans. a = 4.46 m/s2↑

2. The spring of constant k = 200 N/m is attached to both the support and the 2 kg cylinder,
which slides freely on the horizontal guide. If a constant 10 N force is applied to the
cylinder at time t = 0 when the spring is undeformed and the system is at rest, determine
the velocity of the cylinder when x = 40 mm. Also determine the maximum displacement
of the cylinder.
[Ans. v = 0.49 m/s, x = 100 mm]

3. Determine the range of applied force P

over which the block of mass m2 will
not slip on the wedge shaped block of
mass m1. Neglect friction associated
with the wheels of the tapered block.

[Ans. 0.0577(m1 + m2)g ≤ P ≤ 0.745(m1 + m2)g]

4. The sliders A and B are connected by a light rigid bar and move with negligible friction in
the slots, both of which lie in a horizontal plane. For the position shown, the velocity of A
is 0.4 m /s to the right. Determine the acceleration of each slider and the force in the bar
at this instant. [Ans. a = 7.95 m/s2→, a = 8.04 m/s2↓and T = 25 N]

5. The system is released from rest in the configuration shown at time t = 0. Determine the
time t when the block of mass m1 contacts the lower stop of the body of mass m2. Also,
determine the corresponding distance s2 travelled by m2. Use the values m1 = 0.5 kg,
m2 = 2 kg, μs = 0.25, μk = 0.20, and d = 0.4 m.
[Ans. t = 0.589 s, s2 = 0.1824 m]

6. The small spheres are free to move on the inner surface of the rotating spherical chambers
shown in section with radius R = 200 mm. If the spheres reach a steady-state angular
position = 45°, determine the angular velocity Ω of the device.

[Ans. Ω = 3.64 rad/s]

7. A 0.2 kg particle P is constrained to move along the vertical-plane circular slot of radius
r = 0.5 m and is confined to the slot of arm OA, which rotates about a horizontal axis
through O with a constant angular rate Ω = 3 rad /s. For the instant when β = 20°,
determine the force N exerted on the particle by the circular constraint and the force R
exerted on it by the slotted arm.
[Ans. N = 2.89 N←, R = 1.599 N]

[Ans. a1 = 1.784 m/s2 ↑ T = 2.68

8. At the instant under consideration, the
N, (v2)max = 1.928 m/s]
cable attached to the cart of mass m1 is
tangent to the circular path of the cart.
If the upward speed of the cylinder of
m2 is v2 = 1.2 m /s, determine the
acceleration of m1 and the tension T in
the cable. What would be the
maximum speed of m2 for which m1
remains in contact with the surface?
Use the values R = 1.75 m, m1 = 0.4
kg, m2 = 0.6 kg, and β = 30°.
9. The slotted arm OB rotates in a horizontal plane about point O of the fixed circular cam
with constant angular velocity 𝜃̇ = 15 rad /s. The spring has a stiffness of 5 kN/m and is
uncompressed when θ = 0. The smooth roller A has a mass of 0.5 kg. Determine the
normal force N which the cam exerts on A and also the force R exerted on A by the sides
of the slot when θ = 45°. All surfaces are smooth. Neglect the small diameter of the roller.

[Ans. N = 81.6 N, R = 38.7 N]

10. The flatbed truck starts from rest on a road

whose constant radius of curvature is 30 m
and whose bank angle is 100. If the
constant forward acceleration of the truck
is 2 m/s2, determine the time rate after the
start of motion at which the crate on the
bed begins to slide. The coefficient of
static friction between the crate and truck
bed is μs = 0.3 and the truck motion occurs
in a horizontal plane.
[Ans. t = 5.58 s]
