COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 To understand the basic concepts of mobile computing and mobile telecommunication
system.
 To be familiar with the network layer protocols and Ad-Hoc networks.
 To know the basis of transport and application layer protocols.
 To gain knowledge about different mobile platforms and application development.

COURSE OUTCOMES: At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Illustrate the basics of mobile telecommunication systems and the generations of
telecommunication systems in wireless networks
2. Determine the functionality of MAC, network layer and Identify a routing protocol for a
given Ad hoc network
3. Analyze the functionality of Transport and Application layers
4. Develop a mobile application using android/blackberry/ios/Windows SDK

UNIT-I INTRODUCTION                                                   
Introduction to Mobile Computing – Applications of Mobile Computing, Limitations and
Architecture- Generations of Mobile Communication Technologies- Multiplexing – Spread
spectrum -MAC Protocols – SDMA- TDMA- FDMA- CDMA. Wireless LAN: Infrared vs radio
transmission, Infrastructure and ad hoc networks, IEEE 802. 11-System architecture, protocol
architecture, Physical layer, Medium access control layer and MAC management.

UNIT II MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM       


Introduction to Cellular Systems – GSM – Services & Architecture – Protocols – Connection
Establishment – Frequency Allocation – Routing – Mobility Management – Security – GPRS-
UMTS – Architecture – Handover – Security. HIPER LAN-protocol architecture, physical layer
channel access control sub layer, information bases and networking. Bluetooth-User scenarios,
Physical layer, MAC Layer, Networking, Security and Link Management.

UNIT III MOBILE NETWORK LAYER               


Mobile IP: IP and Mobile IP Network Layers, Packet Delivery and Handover Management,
Registration, Tunneling and Encapsulation, Route Optimization – DHCP – AdHoc– Proactive
protocol-DSDV, Reactive Routing Protocols – DSR, AODV , Hybrid routing –ZRP, Multicast
Routing- ODMRP, Vehicular Ad Hoc networks ( VANET) –MANET Vs VANET – Security.

UNIT IV MOBILE TRANSPORT AND APPLICATION LAYER 


Mobile Transport Layer: Conventional TCP/IP Protocols, Indirect TCP, Snooping TCP, Mobile
TCP, Other Transport Layer Protocols for Mobile Networks.WAP – Architecture – WDP –
WTLS – WTP –WSP – WAE – WTA Architecture – WML
UNIT V DATABASE ISSUES:
Database Issues: Database Hoarding& Caching Techniques, Client –Server Computing &
Adaptation, Transactional Models, Query Processing, Data Recovery Process & QoS Issues.
Data Dissemination and Synchronization: Communications Asymmetry Classification of Data
Delivery Mechanisms, Data Dissemination Broadcast Models , Selective Tuning and Indexing
Methods ,Digital Audio and Video Broadcasting (DAB & DVB).Data Synchronization –
Introduction ,Software ,and Protocols.

UNIT VI MOBILE PLATFORMS AND APPLICATIONS   


Mobile Device Operating Systems – Special Constraints & Requirements – Commercial Mobile
Operating Systems – Software Development Kit: iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone –
MCommerce – Structure – Pros & Cons – Mobile Payment System – Security Issues.
