DEPRESSION AMONG TEENAGERS: CAUSES,

SYMPTOMS, EFFECT, AND


TREATMENT

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a sudden feeling of sadness and

loss of interest. It is also a common mental health problem in teenagers and can

ruined one's daily life. Furthermore, it is a serious mental health problem that

affects how teenagers thinks, feels, and behaves, and it can cause emotional,

functional, and physical problems. Although depression can occur at any time in

life. A serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad.

hopeless, and unimportant and unable to live in a normal way. Depression is a

brain disorder that can lead too much emotional anguish. It changes in how your

brain functions also can have a big effect on your body. It also changes your

physical activity, lifestyle, and even your way of thinking- Depression contributes

to a wide array of physical problems that affect everything from your heart to

your immune system.


According to PMC (2018), depression is a common mental disorder that

can affect all societies and age groups. Approximately 350450 million people

worldwide suffer from depression and according to "dis-ability adjusted life

years" criterion; depression is the third or fourth most important cause of diseases

and accounts for a large version of nonlethal diseases. According to Rappler.com

Manila Philippines-over 300 million worldwide suffer from depression. In the

Philippines as Of 2018 over 3.3 million have to deal some form of depressive

disorder, while around 3.1 million go through some form Of anxiety disorder.

According to NIII (National institute Of mental health) depression is a major


depressive
disorder or a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that

affect how you feel, think, such as sleeping, eating and working.

According to Mental health division proposed in Davao City (2018), City

Health Office has been presented before the city council to address rising cases of

psychological illnesses, particularly among teenagers. "Now people have no time to

relax because everybody is moving fast "feeling tired when they get home. We

expect more people will be suffering from mental health disorder due to rapid

urbanization of the city.

In SPMC (Southern Philippines Medical Center) an average of 60 out of 100

who seek medical advice of psychiatry and behavioral science are suffering

depression. The institute caters not just to region I their patients also came from

Zamboanga. Agusan, Butuan. and even Cagayan de Oro, SPMC got five people

who are suffering from depression everyday out of 9 or 10 patients. Not all 60%

patients are admitted at the institute because they only admit those who are already

suicidal. This does not mean that the rest will be brushed off. Not all depressed

person is suicidal. but most commit suicide are depressed. Davao City recorded to

have the highest number Of suicide incidents With 25 in 2016 to 38 in 2017. The

researcher's ideal situation in this research is to prevent or avoid depression

especially in Davao City. Also.


to lessen the victims of this common problem. So that. people will be inform about

depression. And people will know what is the causes, symptoms, effects, and

treatments of this serious problem.

The status of depression nowadays is more rampant, that may cause

teenagers to end their life. In addition, depression can destroy relationship between

families, and friends. It can also change the lifestyle of a teenager who experience

depression. The researchers ideal situation in this topic is to lessen the victim of this

common mental health problem. Parents and their children must have a stronger

relationship, and they are open to each other.

The researchers conduct this study, so that, we will know or inform why a lot

of teenagers are experiencing depression, especially here in Davao City.

Furthermore, the researcher's purpose of this is to identify the different causes,

symptoms, effects, and treatments Of depression. In this way we can also prevent

this kind of mental health problem. And we can help other people who feel

depressed. The researcher's observed that a lot of people especially teenagers are

experiences depression that can lead to suicide. and as years go by this problem is

still seceding. and most student are victim or this. The researcher's conduct this to

add our knowledge. Nowadays a lot of people committed suicide because of

depression.

especially students experiences depression.

Statement or the Problem

This study intends to identify the causes. symptoms, effects, and treatments of

depression among teenagers ( 13-19) specifically it seeks to answers to the following

questions:

What are the causes of depression?

2. What are the symptoms of depression?

What are the effects of depression?


4.What are the treatments of depression?

In what particular age are most prone to depression?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY


The goal of Our research is to know the causes and effects of depression, thus in this way We

can lessen this common problem here in our country, specifically in Davao City. The goal of the study

is detect who is at risk at developing depression and who is not going to develop depression so we can

prevent this problems before they occur. In addition on we are able to find out the effect Of depression

in teenagers. And also how to handle a person who experience depression,

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

The researchers believe that the result of this study can benefit the following:

Parents, The parents will be Inform if what are the causes and symptoms of depression, and

they will know the simple ways how to avoid or prevent depression if their children Experiences it. In

addition, treating depression in teens often improves communication between the parent and the child,

The parents knowing the risk of depression they can help to prevent and avoid their child to be

depressed.

Teenagers. They will know if they are experiencing depression and they can avoid or

Teachers. The teacher Will not be Stress if students feel depress, and they can orient the

students how to avoid or prevent depression, They will be able to understand the changes of the

behavior and academic performances of the students that were engaged to depression.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on the causes, symptoms, effects and treatment of depression in the

teenagers of DAVAO CITY. The study would be done by collecting data in different sources online,
By their strategy the researchers will be able to know the causes. symptoms, effects and treatment of

depression of teenagers in DA VAO CITY.
