PBL Polymer

1. The document describes a student project to create an umbrella from recycled plastic waste to reduce pollution. 2. The objectives were to study polymers, improve polymer usage, reduce plastic waste, and protect wildlife. 3. The students flattened plastic bags, cut them into circles, and attached balloon sticks to create the umbrella frame and attached a plastic handle.

Appreciation
First and foremost, we would like to express our gratitude to

almighty God for enabling us to complete this report on ‘Product from

Polymer Waste’.
Successfully completion of any type of project requires help from a
number of people. Now, there is a little effort to show our deep gratitude to
those helpful people.
We convey our sincere gratitude to our Chemistry Teacher, Pn
Mazrita. Without her kind direction and proper guidance this study would
not have been a little success. In every phase of the project her supervision
and guidance shaped this report to be completed perfectly.
We would also like to thank our parents that had been supporting
us mentally and financially throughout this project. Not to forget our dear
friends who have always given us ideas and help.

1
Introduction
Polymer is a long chain molecule that is made from a combination
of many repeating basic units.
It can either be natural polymers or synthetic polymers. Natural
polymers are polymers that are naturally available and can be obtained
from our surroundings. For example, starch, protein and cotton.
On the other hand, synthetic polymers are man-made through
chemical reactions in laboratories or factories. Nylon, polyethylene and
polystyrene are examples of synthetic polymers that are manufactured
in the industrial sector.
Synthetic polymers are used in various aspects of life. It helps us to
save energy, reduce land use and fertilisers, preserve other materials
using coatings and save lives by way of countless medical applications.
In this project, polymer is used as a form of protection from
appsettings of the weather such as rain and hail. The synthetic
substance composes plastic which will be tough enough to be used as
protection from the weather or as known as an umbrella.

Objectives
★ To study polymer.
★ To improve usage of polymer by good means.
★ To decrease the wastage of polymers affecting the world's health.
★ To prevent microplastic from entering the food chain.
★ To protect the wildlife.

2
Procedures
1. Prepare materials needed to make the product.
2. Place parchment paper beneath and above, then iron the plastic
bags to flatten them. Temperature of the iron should be medium,
so that the plastic bags do not melt critically.
3. Once finished flattening the plastic, cut it into a rectangle where
the length is twice the length of the balloon sticks.

4. Use this rectangular shaped plastic bag and make it into a circle.

5. When the circle shaped plastic bag is prepared, stick the PVC pipe
into the middle of the circle.

3
6. Then stick 7 balloon sticks onto the plastic bag, refer to the picture
below. Use a hot glue gun when sticking the balloon sticks onto
the plastic. You must place parchment papers on the ground when
doing this, because the high temperature of the glue will melt the
plastic and stick onto the ground.

7. Cut another 7 balloon sticks into 25 cm and prepare 7 ‘clip’ like

levers using plastic bottles.

8. Connect the 25 cm balloon sticks with the lever, then connect it

with the balloon sticks on the plastic.

4
9. Cut a piece of plastic from the plastic bottle and tie it onto the PVC
pipe using a rubber band. Make sure the rubber band is tied
tightly, to ensure it does not slip down. Then, connect the other
end of the 25 cm balloon sticks onto the rubberband.

10. Finally, your umbrella is done!!!

Discussion
1. Why is plastic related to polymers?

Plastics, like all other substances, consist of molecules, the small

particles that make up matter. There are large and small
molecules. Plastics always consist of large molecules called
polymers. Polymers, in turn, consist of many identical small
particles that are strung together like a chain.

2. Why did we choose to make an umbrella?

It all started during the rainy season, it rained almost everyday. It

made one of our members really angry and frustrated about it,
since she has to take the bus home. She felt tired of getting wet
everyday. On her way home in the bus, the idea of making an
umbrella popped up in her head. Plastics are waterproof, therefore
it can be used as a material for making the umbrella. Using
recycled plastic to make an umbrella would reduce the pollution
towards our environment and could implement the idea of
recycling, reusing and reducing on a daily basis. There is data
proven that Furthermore, by reusing plastic can help reduce the
number of endangered aquatic animals. It is proven that 8 million
pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our ocean daily. 79%
of plastic waste is sent to landfills or the ocean, while only 9% is
recycled, and 12% gets incinerated. 25 trillion macro & 51 trillion
microplastics litter our oceans. Of that, 269,000 tonnes float on the
surface.

Budget

ITEM QUANTITY PRICE (RM)

PVC Pipe 1 4.50

Balloon sticks 20 6.00

TOTAL 10.50

The total cost used to make this product is only RM10.50. Other materials and
apparatus are found at home. However, if our country is willing to collect waste
plastics to produce more and more products like this. The environment of our
country will be better and would be the role model of other countries.
