Activities Undertaken

Resource speakers from different institutions and agencies including the

Philippine Red Cross Davao City Chapter conducted a 2-day online webinar training
which started last November 19, 2021. The said webinar tackled various topics which
included the Basic Life Support training for students enrolled in the various sections of
the NSTP-CWTS, together with the faculties and personnel who were also present in
the activity.

After a short afternoon break from the preceding topics, the webinar for Basic
Life Support resumed at one o’clock in the afternoon of the same day which were
divided into nine (9) sessions. The first session was all about the Introduction to First
Aid which included the discussion of the definition of first aid, its objectives, concepts
and principles including the legal concerns. Aside from explaining the need for first aid
training in preparing the individuals in case of emergencies, the session was also
informative in tackling about the potential of any Health Hazards and Risks to a person
conducting the first aid treatments. With a brief citation of some of the most Common
Transmissible Diseases, the information of the health threats was established,
therefore supplementing the need for emphasis that while saving someone else’s life,
one must also learn to ensure one’s own health through Prevention and Protection of
transmissible diseases which was also thoroughly discussed in the event. While
showing a short clip of Donning and Removing Gloves, students were taught the
importance of using medical gloves as well as its proper usage and disposal which was
also followed by a step-by-step video demonstration of proper Handwashing. Before
proceeding to the next session, a Section Review was conducted to assess the
students of their learnings from the topic which included a 3 question and answer
portion. The session one ended followed shortly by the next session.

Still anchored on Basic Life Support, the second session focused on the
Emergency Action Steps. With an introduction and discussion of the 5 first aid
emergency action steps, students were basically taught on what one should do upon
witnessing first hand emergencies where there is someone who is in need of help. To
further discuss the topic, the session introduced the acronym of SAMPLE which was all
about Interviewing the Person and the Bystanders for any information to assess
what kind of first aid response should one conduct to. In addition, an acronym of DOTS
was also cited which reminds the rescuer on what to check from head to toe. The
session ended with another Section Review which aimed to assess the learners their
learnings on how to respond upon first hand encounter of a victim. The second session
ended which was followed shortly by the next session.

To discuss an specific scenario, the third session talks about Airway and
Breathing Emergencies and how to manage first aid actions in case of a person
suffering from choking. To firstly introduce what is choking, the Foreign Body Airway
Obstructions were defined and explained which also included its common causes and
signs and symptoms of choking that one has an obstruction in his/her airways. To
supplement more about this topic, this session also discussed on Airway Obstruction
Management for Conscious Adult and Child which was all about what to do during
this kind of emergency scenarios. In addition to that, there are also some certain
instances wherein one needs to be specific on what to do especially concerning a victim
who is an obese or pregnant, disabled, a choking toddler or even yourself alone in the
situation of airway obstruction emergencies. Aside from choking, students were also
taught about Asthma Attack, what are the signs and symptoms of someone who is
suffering under it as well as its first aid management and what to provide as quick-relief
medications. Lastly, the session also discussed on the definition, occurrences, signs
and symptoms and first aid management for someone who is Hyperventilating. To end
the session, a section review was also conducted for assessment.

First Aid for Cardiac Emergencies were discussed in the fourth session. The
session started with an explanation of the nature of heart attacks and its signs and
symptoms. A short 2-minute clip about the Testimonies from Heart Attack Survivors
were shown to the students wherein the survivors narrated their painful experiences and
how their loved ones who performed the first aid management help save their lives from
sudden death. To further the discussion, First Aid Management for Heart Attack was
tackled in this session, teaching students on what to do to someone who is under a
heart attack. To add an additional information, the nature of sudden Cardiac arrest was
also introduced followed by a brief discussion of how sudden this emergency happens
to anyone even without any warning signs. CPRs were also demonstrated and
explained in the session. However, since we are in the times of pandemic, another
method for conducting CPRs without the need of mouth contact was also cited in the
webinar. This includes the Compression-Only CPR, which is the method of using
chest compressions which one could opt to use in case of unwillingness or inability to
provide rescue breaths for any reasons. In addition to that, a video demonstration of
Hands-Only CPR was also shown following the previous topics. Same as the other
previous ones, the session also concluded with another Section Review assessing the
students of their learnings from the said topics.

Traumatic injuries were the main focus of the fifth session. In this topic, the
definition and occurrences of bleeding were discussed followed by the techniques of
controlling breathing in the verge of stopping the flow of blood. Following bleeding,
shock was also discussed, its definition, occurrences as well as its signs and
symptoms. For First Aid Management for Shock, an intensive explanation of what to
do in response to someone who is suffering for shock was also done. Additionally, a
