Types of Transformers

There are several types of transformers that are used for different applications based on their ability to step up or step down voltage. The main types discussed are step-down transformers, which lower voltage and increase current, and step-up transformers, which increase voltage and decrease current. Other transformer types include isolation transformers, which separate circuits without changing voltage, and power transformers, which are used for long-distance power transmission by changing voltages. Each transformer type has different applications based on their electrical characteristics.

Types of transformers
& Their applications

In the electrical and electronic fields, a transformer is a common device. It's

an electromagnetic gadget that works on Michael Faraday's
electromagnetism fundamental concept. It’s a device that distributes electric
energy from one alternating-current circuit to one or more other circuits by
stepping up or down the voltage.
Transformers are used for a variety of applications, including lowering the
voltage of traditional power circuits to operate low-voltage devices and
raising the voltage of electric generators to allow for long-distance
transmission of electric power.

1)Step-Down Transformer:
A step-down transformer converts high voltage (HV) and low current from
the transformer's primary side to low voltage (LV) and high current on the
secondary side. It has a very important function in a power system as it
lowers the voltage level and adapt it to energy consumers.
Applications:
-It's found in many cell phone chargers, CD players, and stereos.
-It can be used to lower the voltage on transmission lines.
-It is used in welding machines to reduce voltage and increase current.
-It will be utilized as well in televisions, inverters, voltage stabilizers, and
other electronic devices.

2) Step-Up Transformer
A step-up transformer raises the voltage from the primary coil to the
secondary coil while maintaining the same power in both coils at the rated
frequency. It converts low voltage and high current from the primary side of
the transformer to high voltage and low current on the secondary side.

Applications:
-These transformers are used to stabilize voltage from low to high in
electrical equipment such as inverters and stabilizers.
-It's a device for distributing electricity.
-It is used to change the high voltage generated by the alternator in
transmission lines.
-It is also used to power electric motors, X-ray equipment, microwave ovens,
and other electronic devices.
-It is utilized to power electronic and electrical gadgets.
3) Isolation Transformer:
A current transformer used to deliver electricity to equipment is known as an
isolation transformer. It is not used to increase or decrease voltage; instead,
it is utilized for other purposes such as separating a circuit into a main and a
secondary to prevent direct current noise from entering.
Isolation transformers are transformers that have the primary function of
isolating circuits. The primary and secondary voltages will be equal in an
isolation transformer, and the two windings will have the same number of
turns to compensate for losses.
Applications:
It can be utilized as a power supply in delicate electronics.
The isolation transformer can isolate a machine or piece of equipment from
the rest of the electrical system, preventing power loss during an installation
malfunction.
In grids that lack a star point, an isolation transformer can be used to
produce one.
It can be utilized as medical transformers because it has a longer life span
due to less heat dissipation.
It will be beneficial in protecting the patient and the operator from electric
shock, as well as protecting the equipment from malfunctioning components
or power surges.
4) Iron Core Transformer:
A transformer with an iron core is an electrical device with an iron core. The
ability of iron to conduct magnetic flux is greater than that of other
components. Permeability is the term for this ability. Magnetic flux is created
in the core when the primary windings are linked to the AC source. Iron cores
are excellent at stimulating secondary winding.
Applications:
-Power plant
-Distribution transformer
-Electric circuit
-Computer
-Television
-Radio
-Amplifier

5) Ferrite Core Transformer:

Ferrite core transformers are those that have a ferrite core and windings
composed of ferrites, which are non-conductive, ceramic, ferromagnetic
compounds. Iron oxides, together with nickel, zinc, and manganese
compounds, make up most ferrite cores in transformers. Because of their low
coercivity, these compounds are also referred to as soft ferrites.
Applications:
-Used as converter and Inverter Transformers
-Used as differential Mode Inductors, Power Transformers, Pulse
Transformers, and Telecom Inductors.

6) Auto Winding transformer

An auto transformer is an electrical transformer with a single winding that is

shared by both the primary and secondary circuits. As a result, the principal
and minor paths share a single winding. In essence, it's a single-wound
transformer.

Applications:

-Testing an Electronic Device after Repairs

-To Power Up an old amplifier or radio
-Line Voltage Drop Compensation
-Temperature Adjustment in Resistance-type Heater
-Changing Speed of a Fan
-Cutting Styrofoam
-Unregulated DC Power Supply of High Current

7) Power transformer:
Power transformers are electrical devices that transport electrical power
from one circuit to another while maintaining the same frequency. They
work on the electromagnetic induction principle. They are used to carry
electrical energy between generators and principal distribution circuits. In
distribution networks, power transformers are used to scale up or down the
voltage. These instruments are classified as static devices since they do not
contain any rotating or moving elements. The electrical system that these
instruments use is alternating current (AC).

Applications:
-Reducing power wastes during electric power transmission
-High voltage step-down and high voltage step-up
-During long-distance consumer applications
-In cases where load runs at full capacity 24×7

8) Pulse Transformer:

Pulse transformers are a type of transformer that is used to provide a digital

control signal from a control circuit to a load. They give a circuit galvanic
isolation while allowing quick control signals to be sent without distorting the
signal structure. In contrast to traditional transformers, the input and output
signal is often a rectangular wave of a few volts with a frequency above 100
kHz, rather than a sinusoidal wave.

Applications:
-Pulse Generating Circuits
-Analog Switching Applications
-SCR
-Power Electronics
-Data Handling Circuits
-Radar
-Switching Transistors
-Communication
-Microwave Tube Circuits
-Control Circuit for Firing Control

9) Three Phase Transformer

Three sets of primary and secondary windings, each wound around one leg
of an iron core assembly, make up a three-phase transformer. To make a
complete unit, those sets of primary and secondary windings will be
connected in either or Y configurations. This section will focus on the
different combinations of ways that these windings can be joined together.
The winding connection options are the same whether the winding sets
share a common core assembly, or each winding pair is a separate
transformer.

Applications:
-Applications that require step up/step down of transmission lines
-Electrical grid station power generation

10) Distribution Transformer:

A distribution transformer is a type of isolation transformer that is commonly
used. This transformer's primary function is to convert high voltage to a
lower voltage, such as 240/120 V, for use in electric power distribution.
Different types of transformers are available in the distribution system,
including single phase, three-phase, subterranean, pad-mounted, and pole-
mounted transformers.
These transformers are often available in a variety of sizes and efficiencies, as
well as insulating oil. These transformers come in a variety of sizes and
efficiency levels.

Applications:
- Commercial Complexes
- Residential Houses and Villas
- Industries
- Educational Institutions
- DISCOM Substations
- Power Plant Applications
- Solar and Wind Applications
