Course Title: Technical Report Writing

Course Description:
This course is about skills and techniques required in the process of producing technical reports.
Computer Science students should be capable to write and present their ideas and technical
descriptions in clear and concise manner. To this end, this course introduces students with the
structure of technical reports, basic and common section of technical report and the role of
each section, standard templates and techniques to be applied in writing technical reports as
well as the language aspects to convey their message clearly and precisely.
Course Goals:
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
 work collaboratively and individually to research, analyze, and write a research paper
regarding the conduct of science and technology
 write focused reports
 express technical details in clear and simple terms
 apply best practices in structuring their document

1.2. Defining the Features\components of Technical Report Writing


1.3. Principles of Technical Report Writing
1.4. Knowing Report Audience, Objectives

2. Formatting Technical Reports

2.1. Cover Page


2.2. Headings, Chapters and Sections
2.3. Running headers and footers

3. Discovering the Main Idea & Arranging Details in Logical Sequence

3.1. Writing styles & techniques


3.2. Good practices in report writing
4. Use of Graphics and References in reports
4.1. Tables, Figures and Graphs
4.2. Reference and Citations
5. Final projects:
Students are required to write one of the following two reports for this course:

 Select two or more algorithms, implement them in programming of your choice, do some
experimentation with real data. Based on the results they find from their experience,
compare and contrast the algorithms. Example: different Graph search algorithms.

OR

 Select one topic in Computer Science. Review the past and present trend of the topic.
Based on your review and your good judgment predict what the future will be. This
should be justified scientifically. Example: Pervasive Computing.

Team Structure

 Three students – since team work is one part of the course


 Instructors should allocate 1 hour per week to meet their respective advisees.
