1 1.introduction

This document provides an overview of control systems, including: - It defines a control system as an interconnection of components that provides a desired system response. - It classifies control systems as either open loop or closed loop (feedback) and provides examples of each. - For closed loop systems, it explains that the measured output is compared to the desired output (reference input) to determine any error that needs to be corrected.

EEE 4105: Control Systems I

System: A combination of elements (components) acting together

Examples: Electrical, Mechanical, Aeronautical, Chemical,
Nuclear, Economic, Management, Organizational,
Biological, etc.
Linear System: is one where the input and output (cause and
effect) are related by a set of linear relationships
Control System: An interconnection of components forming a system
configuration which will provide desired system response

Representation: A process or component to be controlled can be

represented by a block diagram instead of pictorial representation as:

Input Process Output

Arrows are used to show the direction of signal flow

Classification of Control systems

•Open Loop Control System

•Closed Loop Control System or Feedback Control System

In the closed loop or feedback control systems, the measure of output is
compared with the desired output (reference input)
