SECTION- A (OBJECTIVE TYPE)

Q1. In basic solution pH 6, CrO3 forms the tetrahedral yellow chromate ions, CrO42-. Between pH 2 and
6 HCrO4- and the orange red dichromate ion, Cr2O72_, are in equilibrium. At pH values below 1, the main
species is H2CrO4 . The equilibria are
HCrO4- ↔ CrO42- +H+ ,K=10-5.9
H2CrO4-- ↔ HCrO4- +H+ ,K=4.1
Cr2O72- +H2O ↔ 2 HCrO4- ,K=10-2.2
In addition, these are base -hydrolysis equilibria
Cr2O72- +OH ↔ HCrO4- + CrO42-
HCrO4- +OH- ↔ CrO4- +H2O
The pH dependent equilibria are quite labile and on addition of cations that form insoluble chromates
(eg Ba+2, pb2+ ) the chromates and not the dichromats are precipitated

Read the passes carefully and give the answer of the following questions (1X4)
(i)Which of the following statement is correct?
(a)Acidic solution of dichromate are strong oxidants (b) In alkaline solution, the chromate ion is
strong oxidant (c) Acidic solution of dichromate are poor oxidants (d) Both a and b
(ii) The equilibria, Cr2O72- ↔ CrO42- is shifted to right in
(a)an acidic medium (b) a basic medium (c) a neutral medium (d) Both a and b
