1. GENERAL
The subsurface investigation at the subject site has been performed in order to
evaluate the soil properties pertaining to its physical and engineering characteristics.
Constructure Engineering Service Group undertook the work presented in this report. This
report includes field and laboratory studies comprising the general subsurface soil condition
prevailing at the site.
2. SAMPLING PROGRAM
The wash boring method is used for one bore hole. The depth of bore hole is 70ft.
Samples were collected at the depth of 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70ft by using split
spoon sampler. Standard Penetration Test was performed wherever the samples were
collected. Bore hole location plan is appended in this report.
4. LABORATORY TESTS
The tests were performed according to the Standard Soil Mechanics Practices for
finding physical and engineering characteristics of soils. These tests are:
1. Specific Gravity Test ASTM D 854-92
2. Natural Moisture Content ASTM D 2216-90
3. Liquid and Plastic Limit Determination ASTM D 4318-84
4. Grain Size Analysis ASTM D 422-72
5. Unconfined Compression Test ASTM D 2166-8
6. Unconsolidated Undrained Triaxial Test ASTM D 2850-03a
The results obtained from the above mentioned tests are tabulated and are herewith
presented. Soil profile and its corresponding SPT values are graphically presented in this
report. Grain size distribution curves of soils are appended in this report.
5. METHOD OF LIQUEFACTION ANALYSIS (REF; CQHP)
Step 1: The first step is to determine the Seismic Shear Stress Ratio (SSR).SSR induced by
the earthquake at any point in the ground is estimated by
SSR = 0.65 rd (amax)/g (σvo)/σ’vo
in which
amax = peak acceleration measured or estimated at the ground surface of the site (m/s2).
g = acceleration of gravity (9.81 m/s2)
σvo = total vertical stress at a particular depth, where the liquefaction analysis is being
performed ( γsat x z)
σ’vo = vertical effective stress at that same depth where σvo was calculated
= (γsat – γw) z
γsat = saturated unit weight of the soil
γw = unit weight of water
γd = depth reduction factor { 1 – (0.012) (z)}
Z = depth in meters below the ground surface where the liquefaction analysis is
Performed. (the same depth used to calculate σvo and σ’vo)
Step 2: The second step is to determine the Seismic Shear Stress ( SSR’ ) that will cause
liquefaction of the in situ soil. Fig 1 can be used to determune SSR’. In order to use
the fig. SPT (N1)60 must be known. SPT (N1)60 is the corrected SPT N60 for the effect
of overburden pressure.
(N1)60 = CN N60 = [100/ σ’vo]0.5 N60
N60 = 1.67 Em Cb Cr N
Where,
N60 = SPT N value corrected for the field testing procedure
Em = hammer effciency
= 0.6 for a safety hammer
= 0.45 for a doughnut hammer
Cb = borehole diameter correction
= 1.0 for 65 to 115 mm boreholes
= 1.05 for 150 mm boreholes
= 1.15 for 200 mm boreholes
Cr = rod length correction
= 0.75 for up to 4 m of drill rods
= 0.85 for 4 to 6 m of drill rods
= 0.95 for 6 to 10 m of drill rods
= 1.00 for > 10 m of drill rods
N = measured SPT N value
(N1)60= N value corrected for both field testing procedure and overburden pressure
CN = correction factor to account for overburden pressure
= √100/ σ’vo
Where σ’vo = effective overburden pressure in (Kpa)
Fig. 2 presents a chart for sand (5% or less fines) and different magnitude earthquake
Step 3 : The final step in the liquefaction analysis is to compare the Seismic Shear Stress
Ratio values. If the SSR values is greater than the SSR’ values obtained from Fig 1
or Fig 2 then liquefaction could occur during the earthquake, and vice versa.
6. BEARING CAPACITY OF FOUNDATION
According to the Standard Penetration Test Method, allowable bearing capacity based
on Settlement Consideration (DAS) {qnet(all) } can be calculated by following formula:
(Empirical relations by Meyerhof - modified by Bowles)
7. CONCLUSION
The recommended allowable Bearing Capacity of the soil for the shallow
foundation is as follows
Bore Hole Depth Recommended Bearing Recommended Bearing
(ft) Capacity (ksf) Capacity (tsf)
1. 6 1.68 0.75
9 3.36 1.50
