This document provides a 15-step summary of analyzing a steel warehouse design using Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis. The steps include: 1) adjusting display settings, 2) drawing bracing cables and copying them to other bays, 3) applying pinned supports to column bases, 4) defining bracing cables as tension-only, 5) drawing cladding, 6) adding load types, 7) defining loads, 8) generating wind loads, 9) checking for warnings/errors, 10) transferring loads to bracing, 11) setting the analysis as nonlinear static, 12) adjusting member offsets, 13) creating load combinations, 14) viewing results like moments and deformations, and 15) verifying cables act as tension

1-from bottom bar….press on display button or right click in any place…choose
display…favorites….uncheck box of structure axes …members…member
types…legends by color as following snap:

1|Page
2-bracing drawing from right bar…mambers…new section
definition…parametric…circular….and follow the following snaps:

2|Page
 Draw cable bracing in its places for one bay only then copy them to other
bays as mentioned before.

3|Page
 after finishing roof bracing cables by using translation tool , we will draw
end wall bracing by the same way of the previous … then select one
cable….right click…select similar…select by cross section ..from upper
bar..press on edit in new window…the bracing cables will appear alone so
we can select end wall cables easily to mirror them in the other wall side as
the following snap:

4|Page
5|Page
3-columns supports: press on front face ….select bases nodes…..from right bar
press on supports….select pinned.

6|Page
7|Page
4-to make bracing cables working as tension only concept…select cable bracing
…from upper bar …geometry…additional attributes…advanced member
properties…select tension members.

5-cladding drawing: from upper bar …geometry…cladding…rectangular..then pick

three points only in side wall and from lower bar press on panel interiors icon to
show cladding shape as following snaps:

8|Page
 For end wall cladding …choose contour type .

6- load types :from right bar …load types

9|Page
 Then add load types as following snaps:

10 | P a g e
7-Load definition:select roof cladding …from right bar…load
definition…surface…uniform planar load..put value= -0.3 in Z-direction for
load(RL(roof live))…then press on add…..from upper bar change load type to be
DL and put value = -0.1 in Z-direction as following snaps:

11 | P a g e
12 | P a g e
8-wind load: from upper bar…loads…wind load simulations…generate wind loads:

 Insert wind speed=30 m/s…from left bar …cladding…select all …copy the
number of selection from upper bar…paste it in wind exposure
elements…show wind profile shape…press on start as following snaps:

13 | P a g e
14 | P a g e
9- to make sure there is no warnings or errors in the model …from upper bar
…analysis…generation of computational model…

15 | P a g e
9- right click in any place…display…loads…check on load distributions region then
the following shape will appear:

16 | P a g e
10-load transfer: select all cable bracing…from upper part…geometry…additional
attributions….load distributions options…copy the number of selected bracing
from upper bar…paste it in member and panel list…then press ignore:

 Then do the step of making sure from warnings and errors :

17 | P a g e
11- making sure that analysis is nonlinear static because cable bracing is working
as tension members only……from upper bar….analysis….analysis type….check that
all loads are nonlinear static as following snaps:

18 | P a g e
 Then from display… uncheck load distributions region :

12- End offset: from upper bar… geometry…additional attributes…offsets….select

one column…..right click….select similar…select by material….then all columns and
rafters only will be selected….press on edit in new window so selected members
only will appear in this window …in offset menu select upper flange then
apply…then select rigid frame columns that have wrong orientation…then from
geometry….properties….Gamma angle=180

19 | P a g e
20 | P a g e
 To make end wall columns offset : go to front view …select end wall
columns ….from upper bar…geometry…additional attributes…offset….press
on delete….apply as following snaps:

21 | P a g e
 To show offsets: right click in any place….display….check on offset .

22 | P a g e
13-creating load combinations: from upper bar…loads … automatic
combinations…manual combinations….more…check box of uls(ultimate
state)&sls(servisability state)…next..select all…generate:

23 | P a g e
24 | P a g e
 Then all combinations will appear in upper bar as following snap:

 From upper bar..analysis…analysis type…direct analysis method(DAM)…set

parameters….select what code (LRFD or ASD) in our example choose
LRFD..apply additional notional load…ok….calculations:

25 | P a g e
26 | P a g e
 Then the following report will appear:

14-to show analysis : from upper bar…results….press on DAM model view….select

any column…select by material….edit in new window…. Check on My moment…..
scale factor=100….apply…then from upper bar select load case as the following
snap:

27 | P a g e
28 | P a g e
15-to show deformation: press on deformation in result
tap…normalize…apply…then press on bottom bar on putton of displacement /
deformation ….to show deformation values….press on parameters in result
bar….choose labels….apply…..and select load case from upper bar:

29 | P a g e
30 | P a g e
31 | P a g e
 from parameters…choose none instead of labels…deformation…press on
start to start animation:

32 | P a g e
 To show reactions…press on right bar…reactions:

33 | P a g e
 Press on view in buttom bar…XY view…in result bar choose
reactions…check box on Fx & Fy &Fz…descriptions….normalize…apply:

34 | P a g e
 Choose one cable…right click on it….select similar…select by cross
section…to make sure that cables are working as tension members
only…from result bar…select NTM…Fx..normalize…apply…the cables forces
will be tension only:
