Part III. Read the following passage. For question 1-5, choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D). Write your
answers in the corresponding numbered boxes. (10 pts)
Day after day we hear about how anthropogenic development is causing global warming. According to an
increasingly vocal minority, however, we should be asking ourselves how much of this is media hype and
how much is based on real evidence. It seems, as so often is the case, that it depends on which expert you
listen to, or which statistics you study.
Yes, it is true that there is a mass of evidence to indicate that the world is getting warmer, with one of the
world's leading weather predictors stating that air temperatures have shown an increase of just under half a
degree Celsius since the beginning of the twentieth century. And while this may not sound like anything
worth losing sleep over the international press would have us believe that the consequences could be
devastating. Other experts, however, are of the opinion that what we are seeing is just part of a natural
upward and downward swing that has always been part of the cycle of global weather. An analysis of the
views of major meteorologists in the United States showed that less than 20% of them believed that any
change in temperature over the last hundred years was our own fault-the rest attributed it to natural cyclical
changes.
There is, of course, no denying that we are still at a very early stage in understanding weather. The effects of
such variables as rainfall, cloud formation, the seas and oceans, gases such as methane and ozone, or even
solar energy are still not really understood, and therefore the predictions that we make using them cannot
always be relied on. Dr. James Hansen, in 1988, was predicting that the likely effects of global warming
would be a raising of world temperature which would have disastrous consequences for mankind: "a strong
cause and effect relationship between the current climate and human alteration of the atmosphere". He has
now gone on record as stating that using artificial models of climate as a way of predicting change is all but
impossible. In fact, he now believes that, rather than getting hotter, our planet is getting greener as a result of
the carbon dioxide increase, with the prospect of increasing vegetation in areas which in recent history have
been frozen wastelands.
In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that as our computer-based weather models have become more
sophisticated, the predicted rises in temperature have been cut back. In addition, if we look at the much
reported rise in global temperature over the last century, a close analysis reveals that the lion's share of that
increase, almost three quarters in total, occurred before man began to 'poison' his world with industrial
processes and the accompanying greenhouse gas emissions in the second half of the twentieth century.
So should we pay any attention to those stories that scream out at us from billboards and television news
headlines, claiming that man, with his inexhaustible dependence on oil-based machinery and ever more
sophisticated forms of transport is creating a nightmare level of 'greenhouse gas emissions, poisoning his
environment and ripping open the ozone layer? Doubters point to scientific evidence. which can prove that,
of all the greenhouse gases, only two percent come from man-made sources, the rest resulting from natural
emissions.
Who, then, to believe: the environmentalist exhorting us to leave the car at home, to buy re-usable products
packaged in recycled paper and to plant trees in our back yard? Or the sceptics, including, of course, a lot of
big businesses who have most to lose, when they tell us that we are making a mountain out of a molehill?
And my own opinion? The jury's still out as far as I am concerned!
3. More than 80% of the top meteorologists in the United States are of the opinion that _________
A. global warming should make us lose sleep.
B. global warming is not the result of natural cyclical changes but man-made.
C. the consequences of global warming will be devastating.
D. global warming is not man-made, but the result of natural cyclical changes.
6. At the same time that computer-based weather models have become more sophisticated, weather
forecasters have become more expert.
7. Most of the increase in global temperature happened in the second half of the twentieth century.
8. The media wants us to blame ourselves for global warming.
9. The media encourages the public to use environmentally friendly vehicles, such as electric cars to combat
global warming.
10. Many big businesses are on the side of the sceptics as regards the cause of global warming.

PART 1:
B: Today I’m talking to Amy Andrews, a young ski instructor. Amy, how did you decide to become a ski
instructor?
A: I guess the simple answer is – I love skiing! Seriously, though, I knew I wanted to be a teacher of some
kind. I love working with kids so it wasn’t a hard decision to link the two things. I love the fact that no two
days are the same – the people, the snow and weather conditions, the experiences – they’re all totally
different. I was taught by an excellent instructor myself and I learned so much from him.
A: If you teach yourself to ski, you often develop bad habits because noone corrects you and that’s not good.
You might look stupid when you’re skiing or even end up hurting yourself because your technique is poor.
Some complete beginners under-estimate how hard it is. They arrive on the first day, rent their equipment, go
straight to the top of the mountain on the chairlift and then they can’t get down. Then they get scared and just
give up. Part of an instructor’s job is to make beginners feel confident because you’ve taught them the right
way to ski.
B: What was the most important thing you learnt during your training?
A: Well, skiing can be frustrating when you’re a beginner and lots of people give up too quickly. It’s the
instructor’s job to keep them going and developing trust is part of that. Of course they have to like you as
well, so encouraging them, establishing a relationship, having fun with them – that all comes into it. But I
think that the most important thing that my instructor taught me, the key factor if you like, is working out
what each student finds difficult and helping individuals to cope with their fears. For some people that means
managing the skis, for others it’s knowing how to fall over safely.
B: What do you like best about the place where you work?
A: It’s quite a small resort, which is good for me – no huge hotels or massive crowds on the ski lifts. It’s easy
to get to know your students because groups are small and there are loads of really good mountain runs for
people of very different standards. You certainly don’t get bored on them, no matter how often you ski them,
and that’s pretty vital when you’re on them every day! The trees make the whole area really beautiful.
B: What advice would you like to pass on to anyone who’s thinking about becoming a ski instructor?
A: It’s about your gear. Don’t read advertisements or look on websites. If you do, you might just buy the
latest skis, or even go for the most expensive clothes because they look good. Find out what suits you and
what you feel comfortable in and don’t rush the decision. You have to spend long hours in your ski boots, so
it’s really important that they don’t hurt you otherwise you can’t concentrate on your job. You don’t want to
be cold while you’re standing watching others ski. People don’t always tell you that!
B: Thanks, Amy!
PART 2
Sue: So, have you seen many changes in the type of services you offer?
Julie: Oh, yes. These days the competition is much tougher. I suppose the result is that the consumer, the
traveler, has a much better deal. Well, the seats are bigger, more comfortable than they were 10 years ago -
the in-flight entertainment, the films ... now they are all recent release blockbusters. They weren't l0 years
ago. But the two biggest improvements have been to do with the smoking restrictions and the upgrading of
the meals.
Sue: Oh right, tell me about these two changes.
Julie: Yes, the restriction on smoking has had a two-fold benefit. Firstly, the atmosphere is much more
pleasant, and, secondly, the fire risk is greatly reduced. You know, we used to have people dropping
cigarettes, burning the seats. A dreadful fire risk. Can you imagine?
Sue: Terrible.
Julie: I, for one, never understood why anyone was ever allowed to smoke on aeroplanes in the first place.
Sue: Um ... and the meals?
Julie: Ah, with so many carriers vying for passengers on the same route, you just have to offer more.
Vegetarian meals, choice of two hot meals, interesting, exotic, gourmet food – all this is now commonplace
in our economy class galleys. And for the business and first-class passengers, the food is as good as in any
world-class restaurant - top chefs, great presentation, nutritious ingredients ... really quite lovely.
Sue: And finally, what advice or words of warning would you give to school leavers considering a career in
this industry?
Julie: That's a difficult question. I'd say think long and hard about why you want to do it. It's not all
glamorous, and it can be very hard work.
Sue: Julie, it's been fascinating talking to you. Thank you for your time. And just before we go, next week we
will be talking to ...
