GROUP 2 - Handouts For Deductive and Inductive Approach

The document discusses the deductive and inductive approaches to teaching grammar. The deductive approach is teacher-centered, where the teacher presents grammar rules and has students practice applying them. It can be useful for difficult concepts or exam preparation. The inductive approach is student-centered, where the teacher presents examples for students to derive rules from. It may take more time initially but promotes better retention. The best approach depends on learning outcomes, class composition, and how personalized the learning should be. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Inductive and Deductive Approach in Teaching Grammar

I. Deductive Teaching Approach - is also called direct instruction. A deductive approach to
instruction is a more teacher-centered approach. The teacher gives the students a new
concept, explains it, and then has the students practice using the concept.

According to Bob Adamson, The deductive method is often criticized because:

 It teaches grammar in an isolated way,

 little attention is paid to meaning, and
 practice is often mechanical.

This method can, however, be a viable option in certain situations. For example, when dealing
with highly motivated students, teaching a particularly difficult concept, or for preparing students
to write exams, the instructor using a deductive approach typically presents a general concept by first
defining it and then providing specific examples or illustrations that demonstrate the idea.

Students are given opportunities to practice with instructor’s guidance and feedback. For example,
when teaching a new grammar concept, the teacher will introduce the concept, explain the rules related to
its use, and finally, the students will practice using the concept in a variety of ways.

Advantages of Deductive Approach in Grammar Teaching

 Some educators have suggested that deductive teaching approach can be critically important for
students with learning disabilities.
 Some learned best through a deductive approach.
 Deductive learners like to have the general principles identified.

Disadvantages of Deductive Approach in Grammar Teaching

 It doesn’t allow for divergent student thinking.

 It also doesn’t emphasize students reasoning and problem solving.
 Deductive approach cannot increase creativities.

II. Inductive Teaching Approach - it is also called discovery teaching or inquiry teaching. It is
based on the claim that knowledge is built primarily from a learners experiences and
interactions with phenomena. An instructor using an inductive approach begins by exposing
students to a concrete instance or instances of a concept.

A teacher’s role is to create the opportunities and the context in which students can successfully
make the appropriate generalizations and to guide students necessary.

For example, a teacher writes on the board a few examples of simple present and simple past
sentences. The teacher then asks the students what differences they notice in the sentence. The students
discuss the difference and maybe even try converting some simple sentences from present to past on their
own. Finally, the teacher explain the rules for converting sentences from past to present.

Advantages of Inductive Approach in Grammar Teaching

 Students may draw approaches.

 Inductive approach can increase your creativity.
 Inductive approach showed better long term retention.
 Meet the challenges of the new world.

Disadvantages of Inductive Approach in Grammar Teaching

 Students may draw other meaning from the examples.

 The inductive approach may also take more time and be less efficient than a deductive approach.
 Certain ideas do not lend themselves easily to an inductive teaching approach.

How can a teacher decide which method or teaching approach is the best choice for a given topic?

Both deductive and inductive sequences are valuable for teaching concepts, generalizations,
processes, and skills. The teacher must decide which to select given the learning outcomes desired and the
composition of the class. When choosing, the teacher should consider a number of factors:

1. How personalized should the learning be?

Students will usually be more involved in the learning experience and tend to participate
more actively when an inductive approach is used. If a deductive approach is chosen, it is

important to structure the learning experience in order to draw on students' prior experiences and
learning, and to provide for their active involvement.

2. Should learning experiences be predictable?

The deductive approach is more predictable because the teacher selects the information and
the sequence of presentation.

3. What depth of understanding and rate of retention is desired?

Students tend to understand and remember more when learning occurs inductively.

4. How much time is available to teach the material?

The deductive approach is faster and can be an efficient way to teach large numbers of
facts and concrete concepts.
