This document provides an introduction to computer-aided design (CAD). It defines CAD as using computers to assist with the design process, including creating drawings and 3D models, visualization, and simulations. The design process involves clarifying problems, specifying requirements, conceptual design, embodiment design, and detail design. CAD systems have hardware components like computers and input/output devices, as well as software for solid modeling, assembly modeling, and simulations. The document compares different CAD software programs and discusses the goals and expectations of the course.

More Specific Definitions
• Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is the technology
concerned with the use of computer systems to assist in
the creation, modification, analysis, and optimization of a
design. [Groover and Zimmers, 1984]

• Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the technology

concerned with the use of computer systems to plan,
manage, and control manufacturing operations.

• Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) is the technology

concerned with the use of computer systems to analyze
CAD geometry, allowing the designer to simulate and
study how the product will behave.
