Civil engineering has existed since ancient times when early humans built shelter caves for protection. Some of the earliest civil engineering projects included structures built by ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians between 4000-2000 BC, including transportation networks and large constructions like pyramids. One of the first documented civil engineers was Imhotep in ancient Egypt who built the step pyramid for King Djoser around 2550 BC using simple tools and mathematics. Throughout history, civilizations developed major engineering projects such as aqueducts, bridges, dams, roads, and irrigation systems that demonstrated the advance of the field. The modern discipline of civil engineering emerged in the 18th century with the establishment of engineering schools and societies.
