I. Very Short Answer Questions
1. What do our roadways include?
A. Our roadways include national highways, state highways, district roads
and village roads.
2. When was the first railway network established in India?
A. The first railway network in India was between Mumbai and Thane,
established in 1853.
3. Name five cities which have metros.
A. Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur and Mumbai.
4. What is communication?
A. Communication is the method through which we share information.
5. Who showed that radio signals can travel long distances?
A. The Indian scientist Jagdish Chandra Bose was the first person to show
that radio signals can travel long distances.
II. Short Answer Questions
1. An effective way of reducing traffic congestion is to improve the public
transport system. Explain.
A. If the public transport is good, people will tend to use more of it than
their private vehicles.
This will reduce traffic congestion.
2. Why is Internet known as the Information Superhighway?
A. Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks.
Whenever we want any information about anything in the world, we can
get it from the Internet. That is why it is also called the Information
Superhighway.
3. What is satellite communication? What are its uses?
A. Satellite communication is the transmission and receipt of signals
through satellites. It is through these that we are able to see a live
cricket or football match taking place in any part of the world.
Telephone and computer signals are also sent through these
Communication satellites.
III. Long Answer Questions
1. Explain the two types of land transport.
A. There are two types of land transport. They are the roadways and the
railways.
Roadways
 Roadways play a crucial role in connecting different parts of our
country. Our country has one of the largest road networks in the world.
Railways
 The first steam engine train was built about 200 years ago.
 Now the steamengines are replaced by highly developed engines that
use diesel and electricity.
 This enables the trains to run much faster and carry more goods and
passengers.
2. The idea of mass communication came with the invention of the
printing press. Explain.
A. The idea of mass communication came with the invention of the
printing press.
 Eversince printing press was invented around 1440 by Johannes
Gutenberg in Germany, printing continues to be one of the most
popular means of mass communication.
 All books, magazines, newspapers and letters which we see around us
are a result of printing.

Chandrayaan-1, India's first mission to Moon, was launched successfully on
