Life without literature is like a black and white abstract art---boring, complicated and yet,
colorless. It’s also like an ocean that doesn’t have waves---plain, dull and sad. Literature is any written
works that helps us to travel back in time and learn about life in the whole world from those who have
gone before us. It is essential so we can have a deeper understanding of cultures and appreciate them
even more.
Books and other written works that are deemed to have creative or aesthetic worth or enduring
significance are classified as literature. Traditionally, the term has been given to visionary works of
poetry and prose differentiated by their writers' goals and the perceived aesthetic brilliance of their
execution. As a college student, it is very important to study literature for us to learn the ways on how
our history being documented that we can pass on to the next generation. Studying literature is
necessary for us to understand everything in life such as the culture and traditions being practiced in
the world and so we can appreciate them. It somehow helps us to get out of the shell and express
what’s on our mind and heart through writing poems, song lyrics, stories, and etc. For individuals who
hear and read literature, it serves as a language model. Students acquire new vocabulary, grammar,
and discussion and debate functions through literary literature, as well as accurate sentence patterns
and typical story structures. Studying literature basically improve our thinking and writing abilities.
Moreover, literature does not only refers poetry and song, rather, it refers to works of the
creative imagination, including drama, fiction, nonfiction, and in some instances, and journalism.
Hence, writing literature is not easy for it has a lot of demands which makes the reason for us to study
it. Literature exposes us to a broader spectrum of emotions. It makes us place ourselves in the shoes
of others in which we learn to change our viewpoint. We discover who we are and who we want to be
in the process. And we are subjected to the second-order effects of our decisions without having to
live them ourselves. By having literature in our lives, our vocabulary, organizational abilities, and the
capacity to read, comprehend, and evaluate literature are enhanced. Studying literature could help us
a lot in different aspect of our lives that really matters.
Furthermore, we need to study literature for it to be valued and to be preserved. Literature has
a great importance in a society such that it may give people with vital historical context, develop
sympathy for other humans, and promote respect for variety and knowledge of various cultures. No
matter where we go, we bring the respect and the knowledge that we have to the different culture of
the different nations. Literature truly means everything in our lives in the sense that, despite the fact
that we are dealing with a complex issue in our lives, literature has taught us to enjoy the simple things
that surround us, no matter how hard the situation is. Personally, literature is a great of help to me
because it inspires me and give me motivation to always see the miracle and the good things that I
have in my life. Literature is one of the thing in this world that validates our feelings or individuality and
helps us to create our own method to express or write about what is important to us. Literature expands
our sense of self, allowing us to live authentically which could be in writing and in spoken words.
Literature has a great impact in our daily lives. It helps us to think critically, express our ideas
and feelings, and somehow be our escape from reality. Literature is the only one who will listen to our
drams in life and that would tell us that our feelings are valid. Therefore, as a college student, I’ll say
that studying literature is necessary for it makes us go back to the history, understand traditions and
culture, knowing the different sides or viewpoints in a story, and put our shoe to the other people and
give them our sympathy. Literature indeed is everything to us in this world.

Authentic smile that I admire
The “me” inside a frame

3. Laptop
Blue lights’ what I see

Still, why I feel blue?

#2. LYRIC POETRY: SONNET

Rain
You no longer mourn with our dead-end love,
“The Ones We Once Loved”, closure song you dropped,
Shocked! Finally, you buried what “we” have;
Wanted to see your big round eyes and clap,

Perhaps, cigarette type of love, it is;

Argue now and then---our daily routine,
The cycle of love war makes it feel cheese,
Regret everything all of a sudden;

Remember the mem’ries---our laughs and cries;

Reminiscing made my heart skipped a beat,
Been years now since I cut our gray-like ties,
To resurrect dead love is now too late;

Truth be told, our story ain’t just hearsay,

Now, you and I, walk in separate way.

(Essay)

Life without poetry is like an evening that doesn’t have lights---all we see is the darkness in life.
It’s also like a storm that doesn’t have rainbow---hopeless. Poetry is a form of literary that basically
helps us to express our feelings and thoughts in different ways and forms. It also enables us to
understand different point of view and perspectives which we can apply and relate in our everyday
lives.

Poetry depicts many aspects of human nature that literally be the reason why it inspires us.
Poetry is essential to our lives that we need to study in order for us to enhance our critical thinking
skills and way of thinking towards a certain object and happenings that we encounter every single day.
It somehow helps us to get out of the shell and express what’s on our mind and heart through writing
poems, song lyrics, and etc. Studying poetry is very important because aside from expressing our
feelings and ideas, it also enable us to control our thoughts and emotions. It means everything in our
life, in a sense that, though we are dealing a complex situation in our lives, poetry made us appreciate
the little things that surrounds us despite how complicated the situation is. Life is so tiresome but poetry
makes it fun. Life is like a black and white abstract art that only we can appreciate the beauty in it if
we try to comprehend and put colors. Poetry became our hope of everything, it is like a colorful rainbow
that we can look up above the sky after a rain and it is as brighter as the color of an abstract art.

Moreover, poetry is somehow considered as an art because it awakens our creativity and
imaginations in forming ideas. Also, poetry improves mental ability by connecting words together with
a beat. Studying poetry encourages young people or the students to be artistic and creative in
expressing their ideas and feelings which many people find to be severely missing in today's
environment. Every poems that we read, and every songs that we love to sing is what poetry is.
Somehow, in every poems, and songs, we learn a lot of lessons and it gives us motivation to continue
with our exhausting life. Hence, it is necessary for us to study poetry to nurture and molds us---the
youngsters to be an awesome poet someday that would produce an inspiring story about everything
in the society.

Furthermore, poetry isn’t just only about a poem and lyrical song, rather, it contains a beautiful
story of one soul which somehow shows feelings, practices, beliefs, culture and traditions, and most
especially, the different perspective of the character and/or the writer. By knowing and understanding
the different aspects in life, it gives us access to understand and respect the perspectives of different
people in the whole wide world. And in our daily life, we could relate everything that we learned about
poetry in reading the situation by knowing the different sides of the story that would lead us to
understand what is what and why is why. Our minds would also became open to anything, since we
know that there are always many sides and viewpoints in a story that we hear from anyone.
Additionally, our heart would easily also accept any matters in a complex situation because poetry
teaches us to always look at the bright side of everything and that life is beautiful. Studying poetry
helped us a lot to understand an abstract art-like life.
Therefore, studying poetry is very important for it enables us to understand and respect the
perspectives of different people in the whole wide world. Also, in poetry, aside from expressing our
feelings and ideas, it also enable us to control our thoughts and emotions which can really help us in
motivating ourselves from a complicated situation. By studying poetry, it helps us connect words from
our ideas and it helps us connect to the whole wide world as well. Studying poetry is necessary for it
put meaning to everything and help us understand the complex in life.

1. Ukinurot is a hunter in heaven who loves to hunt animals so that they will probably have
something to eat. He is a sharp shooter in a sense that a large bird was shot and the arrow
passed clean through its body. Also, Ukinurot was more a leader-like type because as he saw
the shining water and the green earth below, he call all the people so that they can see it as
well. He’s not selfish because he let all his companions to enjoy the green earth except for the
fat woman and he was the last to descend.

2. In the heavens that there people lived and has brown and bare landscape.

3. The conflict of the story is when he shot the large bird and the arrow passed clean through its
body and landed on the ground and was deeply embedded in the ground in a distance away.
Also, a good amount of soil came with the arrow as he pulled it and it leaves a large hole in the
ground. This conflict greatly affects the character’s action for it makes the character to explore
and discover what they have seen in the hole which is the shining water and the green earth.

4. The myth has a linear type of plot because it provides a clear viewing experience which we
read the story’s events in chronological order. The linear plot in myth has six different parts,
the exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution. The exposition
is in the first part of the story, it is the introduction which describes the heaven and earth. In
the myth, the exposition is, “The people lived in the heavens and there were yet no human
beings on earth. However, on earth was glistening water and fresh green plants and trees”.
And the conflict in the story is in the second paragraph which is the, “While hunting one day, a
large bird swam into his ken. He aimed his bow and arrow at it and shot. The arrow passed
clean through the bird’s body and landed on the ground, a distance away, and was deeply
embedded in the ground”. Moreover, the rising action of the story is, “As he pulled it, a good
amount of soil came up with the arrow, leaving a large hole in the ground”. Then the climax of
the story is, “Ukinurot peered through the hole and saw below him shining water and green
earth. He summoned his companions, men and women, and all were pleased with what they
saw”. Furthermore, Falling action in the story is in the third paragraph which is, “then they
decided to go down. They plucked the bird’s feathers and twined a roped with them. Then one
by one they climbed down. A rather fat woman could not go through the opening. Ukinurot was
the last to descend”. Finally, the resolution of the story is, “As soon as he touched earth, the
rope snapped. So they could no longer return. The fat woman who remained in heaven, lights
up the stars every night to remind the people below whence they originally came. The hole
through below which they descended now shines as the moon”.

5. The POV in the story is the Third Person’s POV. Yes, I think the POV chosen is appropriate
since it is a narrative-like story or myth.

6. The tone in the myth is formal, clear and light, and the mood is happy.

7. The beginning of human beings to live on a green earth.

Application

1. The young boy is an eight years old, and the young girl only seven years who loves pencils.
Both the young boy and young girl were very tall for their age and their legs were the long gangly
legs of spine spirited colts. Also, they are sweet, kind and innocent but they are both lazy to do
their homework.

2. When the mother told the father about Vicente’s actions towards the kids, he doesn’t believe
her because he just literally ignore and did not pay any further attention towards his wife. From
his reaction, I can say that he’s a kind of father who doesn’t care and love his kids. He is being
a passive father who ignore what’s going on inside their house. He’s not a protective type of
father. Therefore, he is an example of an absentee parenting.

3. The children have an amazing, very observant, vigilant, and a protective one who always look
for their safety.

4. The pencil represent desire that Vicente grabbed to manipulate the kids so he can do his bad
intention towards the girl.

5. The story have the title Magnificence which means impressive because of the
overprotectiveness of the mother to her children that made her save her kid from Vicente’s
hands who’s a pervert or a maniac. And by doing so, the mother did not over react such as
being scandalous no matter how angry, insulted, and worried she was that time, instead, she
just leave her kid being innocent and ignorant of what just happened so the kid won’t have
trauma that could really affect her whole life in the future.

6. I felt happy and sad at the same time. I felt happy because of how impressive the mother is to
her children and I’m sad because of how the father acts in the story. I think if this happens to
someone I know, I’d probably do what the mother did but maybe the difference is that I will
maybe act scandalous to the point that I would slap the predator with my own hands.

7. I think the organizations in the society should have a symposium for everyone who can be a
victim of this incident. Also, there should be an organization or groups that would help initiate
to reduce this kind of situation in the society. Last but not the least, the parents or even the
children should also be observant to the people around that could may be a predator or that
has bad intentions. Everyone in the society is responsible for this matter and no matter who and
what we are, we should always be vigilant in everything around us.

Lesson No. and Title Lesson 1: Early Settlers in Mindanao

Time Frame 1 week

Application

1. The story greatly affects the aspect of spirituality of the modern citizens of Mindanao in a sense
that the modern people in Mindanao has different religions in the present life. The story shows
that Pandaguan worshipped the huge shark as his god which also happens I today’s generation
in Mindanao where there are people who even worship rocks, animals, and etc. that they
believe that it will bring miracle to their lives. Meanwhile, the story also shows how fearful
Mindanao people to their gods which reflects in the modern day where Mindanawons is being
faithful and fearful to what they believe as their god. And I think that’s how the story greatly
affect the spiritual aspect of the modern people in Mindanao.

2. It portrays the differences of culture of the whites, blacks, the yellows, and the other races by
stating that people who lived from different places/location has different colors of skins and
culture as well because of their ancestors. In the story, Pandguan who was punished by the
gods was the reason why people became different from their skin colors in which their relatives
was being taken away to another land which they would face different struggles and scenarios
in their daily lives. Also, because of the different climate, lifestyle and circumstances, the
people from North, South, East and West basically practiced different lifestyle that also affects
their physical appearance and spirituality.

3. In the Children of Limokon, I think the Mandayans consider limokon as their ancestor because
as they all know, it was the limokon who laid the two eggs; one at the mouth of the Mayo River
which happen to be where the man lived at, and the other egg was laid farther which also
happens to be where the woman was discovered. Also, it is what they believe because all they
know was there were no people living yet at that time, only the limokon who talked like men.
Lastly, maybe they believed that the eggs hatched transformed into finally a man and a woman.

4. For the Bagobos in the story Origin, water is considered as the most important thing to have.
Based on story, after Toglai and Toglibon died and became spirits, they encountered drought
for three long years which makes them decide to go somewhere else to find food, water, and
a place to live in. In that case, the siblings went to the different directions with the same goal—
to find food, water, and a better place to stay that would provide their basic needs and now,
that place became their permanent location to stay at.

5. There are a lot similarities the stories have such as it shows how the life on earth began.
Additionally, the stories are similar in a sense that, it also shows how and why Mindanao has
different races, tribes, circumstances, cultures, practices and beliefs. It also shows how
Mindanawons struggle to find a place to settle as where they lived in the present.

6. After reading all of the stories, I can say that Mindanao’s culture is amazing and rich. Based
on the stories, I can tell how they take care and preserve their culture, traditions, practices and
beliefs as Mindanawons. Mindanao has undeniably different cultures, traditions and beliefs
which makes them rich in it.
