BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Family

EDUCATIONAL
KSG currently rents a dormitory in Guagua, Pampanga with his friends. He has been
living far from his family for 2 years now although he still goes back home to his family in San
Fernando, Pampanga during the weekends and stays there during summer vacation. He is the

PURPOSES ONLY
eldest son and has 3 siblings, one younger brother and one youngest sister. He has a good
relationship with his mother who raised them on her own for a good part of their childhood
because KSG’s father is an OFW in Saudi since he was 6 years old. He said that his mother
tends to nag but despite that, he feels that his mother loves him and his siblings. Meanwhile,
his father goes back home every 2-3 years and when he does, he always makes time for the
children. He said that his father is more “malambing” than his mother. KSG’s perception about
his family is generally favorable for him although they sometimes have problem in their
finances. He wants to make his family proud by finishing his studies and passing the Civil
Engineering Board Exam.

As a child, KSG was playful and academically competent person. He was always in the
top 10 students of his class during his elementary years and was in a top section during his high

SAMPLE ONLY
school years. He was also a member of the cartooning department of their school newspaper
during elementary and early high school years. KSG was not only academically active but he
was also active in extra-curricular activities. He said that he owes his academic performance to

FOR
his mother because of her supervision in his studies. He mentioned that his mother does not
necessarily force him to study but her presence alone makes him take his studies seriously.
During his high school years, his academic achievement slowly dwindled and when he
reached college, his grades went down. He failed some subjects during his second year in

EDUCATIONAL
college and was advised to take summer classes. By this time, he was already renting a
dormitory which means no supervision from his mother. He admitted that this newfound
independence has affected his academic performance. When asked if he was “nabarkada”, he

PURPOSES ONLY
immediately said that he was not and it was his own fault. Since then, he has been struggling
to keep up with his classmates and the subjects. He continued to fail on other subjects.
Fortunately, he was able to take summer classes on his failed subject so it is highly probable
that he will only extend for one semester for his civil engineering degree. He explicitly said
that he was not satisfied with his performance and feels somehow inferior to some of the people
he knows in his school. He mentioned that he feels the pressure of the expectations of other
people and that stresses him out.
When he feels stressed or burned out, he said that he often turns to video games to
relieve his tension. He also likes hanging out with his friends to have fun. He said that whenever
he feels the pressure, he just tries to keep his mind off of those negative thoughts by looking
on the bright side of it.
KSG is academically competent person throughout his childhood until his early
adolescence but when he reached college, it seems that his performance changed. Aside from
the reason for referral mentioned, this assessment also aims to explore the deeper problem that
caused KSG’s academic performance to plummet which led him to feel pressured and stressed
about his studies.

Generally, KSG’s attitude towards the examiner was good. He was in a good mood and
was cooperative in sharing information about himself. During the interview, he responded with
a jovial tone and when test taking finally began, he was focused in answering.
He never gave up in answering the questions in taking the IQ test. He often used up the
time limit and sometimes resist to move on to other items when his time limit is up. He said
that he likes the challenge of taking up the tests while smiling broadly. He laughed at himself
when he got some items wrong or when he realized that he was wrong in the quantitative
reasoning items. He seems to enjoy taking the test like it is a competitive game.
While he took the IQ test in high spirits, his demeanor became more serious and took
significant amount of time in doing the Draw-a-Person and Kinetic Family Drawing. The result

SAMPLE ONLY
were artistic drawings. He said that he had artistic training although he stopped halfway during
his high school years.
In narrating his stories in TAT, KSG was slow and hesitant in telling what he sees. He

FOR
tend to tell straight to the point stories with broad details and frequently uses filler words. He
needs to be prompted to tell more about his narratives. Despite these, he was cooperative and
tried hard to verbalize his stories.

EDUCATIONAL
KSG was in good mood throughout the assessment and very cooperative. He was
excited about the tests and respectful, but not stiff to the examiner.

KSG’s intellectual functioning is on the average range. He performs just as well as most
of the people in his age. This means that his intellectual functioning may not be the cause of
his failure in some of his subjects. His main strength is his working memory which indicates
that he does well in tasks like mental calculations. KSG got a higher score in nonverbal tests
which means that he does better in task that are more visual in nature.

Emotional and Interpersonal Functioning

Test results in emotional and interpersonal functioning suggests that KSG is highly
adjusted and emotionally stable. He is generally optimistic about life and has a good

SAMPLE ONLY
relationship with his family and friends maybe due to his cooperative nature. He is open to new
experiences but also highly vigilant. He has high regard to his family members especially to
his mother.

FOR He may have an ambivalent perception about his father as suggested by his conflicting
response to the tests. This may be due to his father’s work as an overseas Filipino worker. They
do not spend as much time as would normally be but despite that, KSG said in the interview
and in one of the tests that his father is a great father. Nevertheless, he wants to make his parents

EDUCATIONAL
proud of him as evidenced by the test results and in the interview.
One way that KSG chose to do to honor his parents is to become a licensed Civil
Engineer. This path, according to him is a path he chose for himself although he said that his

PURPOSES ONLY
first choice was to become an architect. Maybe, he thinks that becoming an engineer or an
architect will not only give his parents joy but it will also help in a financial standpoint. KSG’s
test results suggest that he feels somehow insecure to others, maybe because of this financial
instability. This insecurity might in turn became another one of his motivation in choosing the
course he is in now.
Choosing engineering as his course can be seen as an act out of necessity (to please
parents and help financially) and not because he likes engineering per se. This half-heartedness
showed in the results of his tests as it was consistent throughout that he talks about wanting to
do what he really wants. He may not recognize it but he may feel like he is being forced to do
something that he does not want to do. Probably, this feeling of being forced to do something
is the reason why it is hard for him to muster up motivation to study well. He is conflicted with
his need to do something for his parents and his need to become someone he wants to be.
It is highly possible that he wants to pursue and develop his talent in drawing or graphic
design. He performed well in visual-spatial subtests, he also made artistic drawings in his tests

4 of 6
Report for: KSG
Strictly Confidential

that required drawing people and he reported that he was once a part of the cartooning
department of a campus newspaper. These feats suggest that he has skill in drawing and he
likes drawing. Perhaps the reason why he did not pursue this path is because he is skeptical
about the stability of a graphic design career, as the results suggest that he has high vigilance.
He wants to help his family financially so he ultimately chose a career that for him, will bring
more financial stability to him and his family. The results suggest that he is open to new
experiences so it was not hard for him to choose a path that he is not familiar with. This
ultimately led him to enroll in Civil Engineering. According to him, he now does not have time
to draw due to his studies. This lack of time in doing what he likes may be one of the reasons
why he now finds no meaning on the things he is doing which also contributes to his low level
of motivation.
KSG is persistent as evidenced by not giving up any item in the IQ test despite his self-
reported laziness. He said that he likes challenges with a smile in his face. This attitude paired
with his optimism, spontaneity and friendliness are his strengths that will help him in facing
his academic challenges.

SUMMARY

KSG has an average level of intellectual functioning and he may be having a

motivational problem in his studies. This motivational problem may have been the reason why

SAMPLE ONLY
he failed his subjects. He does seem to prefer another course or another thing to do other than
the course he is taking. His interest and talent in visual arts suggest that he wants to pursue a
career in graphic designing but he knows that becoming an engineer will bring more joy to his

FOR
parents in general. He is torn between following his passion and the expectation of his parents
that is why he is having a hard time in mustering up motivation to do well in his academics.
It is probable that his motivation problem is a cycle; he is half-hearted in engineering,
so he does not do his all, then he fails, then he feels pressure/stress as he was expected to do

EDUCATIONAL
well, then he looks for alternative which makes him more half-hearted and the cycle goes on.
To break that cycle, he must recognize he is hesitating to study then finally decide what to do.
Whatever he may decide on doing, KSG showed that he is a persistent person and he likes

PURPOSES ONLY
challenges. He does not back down to problems so pushing through his studies is highly
advisable and achievable.
KSG is a talented artist and a loving son. Maybe, finding the right balance in honoring
his parents and satisfying his desires will help him more in his academic life as well as in his
life in general.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. He can join a peer study group to help him in his studies. Finding a study group will be
easy for him since he is a friendly person. He showed that he is persistent and his intellectual
capability is adequate to perform well if given enough time to prepare.
2. He can make time to draw more and expose his work by any means (through social media,
to his friends, through campus newspaper, etc.) This can help him in expressing himself

the way he wants to. Doing the thing he likes doing can help him recharge and relax when
times get rough or when he feels the pressure.
3. Recognize that he has needs to make his parents proud and do things that he loves. It is not
a choose-one-over-the-other scenario. He can honor his parents while at the same time still
follow his passion.
4. Remind himself often of the reason why he took engineering in the first place to reignite

SAMPLE ONLY
his motivation in pursuing the course.
