Workshop 1 Basic Modelling EN

This document provides an overview of basic piping system modeling in ROHR2. It discusses starting a new project, defining pipe dimensions and materials, building a piping system including pipes, valves and supports, applying loads, running calculations, and viewing results. The document is a training manual divided into multiple workshops.

New project

 Choose save path and Commission

(Project and System are optional)

 Note the file structure

 Choose standard and manufacturer of

hangers (this can also be changed later)

Project settings

Presettings
• The default (VUU) assumes welds at each
node => SIF = 1.8

• Using the setting VUB – butt weld flush provide

correct setting for butt welds according to EN
13480 appendix H1
• t ≥ 5 mm => SIF= 1.0
• t < 5 mm => SIF= 1.8

• Change Straight line and Support to PGR –

straight line to obtain SIF = 1.0
• Most supports are clamped to the pipe, no weld joints
present.

Pipe dimensions
 DN200 is available per default for EN13480
 Edit or New opens the edit window as
can be seen down to the right
 Click on Standard and choose DN100
according to the picture

Building the piping system

 Choose pipe dimension in

the drop-down list
 Choose to start drawing
 Click somewhere in the
graphics window
 Enter e.g. 0,0,0 as start
coordinates
 Use the window to enter the
piping system

Building the piping system
Add a valve
 Choose from the left
toolbar
 Click on the pipe close to the
end where the valve should be
“starting”, I this case node 5.
 Insert the start nod by enter
the data

Building the piping system
 Enter Length and Mass. Tick in the box
for Flange
 Choose flanges according to standard
PN10

Building the piping system
Add fix points at the ends:
 Choose from the left
toolbar
 Click on the node at one
end
 Choose Anchor point to
fix all degrees of
freedom
 Repeat for the other end
 Tips: Check box “Insert
multiple”

Define loading
 Choose from the left toolbar
 Click on “Add” and enter data as shown in figure below

Define loading
Select the piping system
 Right click in the graphics window and choose Select >
Start to end node or select in the toolbar

 Select the start node and then the end node so that the
system will be highlighted in red

 Click on Assign

 Note that the icon to the left of the load gets the
-symbol

Define loading
 Select the load and click on Copy

 Select Operation and Shutdown and

press OK

 Click Yes to the question to assign the

load to the same pipes

Define loading
 Change to Shutdown-load case in drop
down-menu

 Double click on existing data and

change to 0 bar, 20 °C and 0 kg/m³

Run the calculation
 Click on the button in the toolbar or
use File > Calculate

 Choose All in the windows to calculate

everything and hit OK

Run the analysis
 After completion of the calculations a
window will show up displaying overall
information about the analysis

 View the messages.

 Som messages are informational while
other can be more serious, for example the
requirements according to piping code is not
fulfilled

 In the picure right it says that the pipe wall

thickness is less than 5 mm and Rohr2 has
modified the setting to VUU giving SIF= 1.8
for buttwelds.

View the calculated results
 Click on Result

 In the drop-down list we can choose

which results to look at
 Primary load – displacements, forces, etc. due
to gravity + pressure
 Operation – displacements, forces, etc for the
operating case
 Support loads, providing an option to easily get
extreme values in different ways
 Stress analysis S1, S2 and S3 – stresses
according to standard
