Replacement: wheel bearing – PEUGEOT 405 I Saloon (15B). Tip from
AUTODOC:
Do not re-use the bearing assembly of your PEUGEOT 405 I Saloon (15B) car.
The wheel hub bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the
same axle.
Please note: all work on the car – PEUGEOT 405 I Saloon (15B) – should be done
with the engine switched off.
3 Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.

5 Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts.

7 Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
8 Unscrew the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use Torx T55. Use a tap wrench. Use a ratchet wrench.

10 Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor plug.
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting
from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.
Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.
Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result,
the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and
depressurization of the system may occur.
Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them.
Replace, if necessary.

12 Take out the retainer clip and move the brake hose out of the bracket on the shock strut. Use round-nose pliers.
14 Unscrew the ABS sensor wiring bracket. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.

16 Clean the brake disc fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
19 Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

20 Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
21 Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
22 Clean the fastener that connects the suspension arm to the ball joint. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
23 Unscrew the fastener that connects the suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #21. Use a
ratchet wrench.
24 Disconnect the lower control arm from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller. Use a crowbar.

25 Remove the cotter pin securing the hub nut. Use round-nose pliers. Use a flat screwdriver.
26 Clean the wheel hub fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
27 Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #36. Use a ratchet wrench.
29 Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
30 Unscrew the fastener connecting the ABS sensor to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet
wrench.

31 Remove the ABS sensor from the steering knuckle.
32 Clean the lower fastener connecting the suspension strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40
spray.
33 Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #16. Use a
ratchet wrench.
35 Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut. Use a hammer.
37 Remove the wheel hub from the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.

38 Remove the wheel hub bearing retaining ring. Use round-nose pliers.
39 Press out the wheel hub bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
40 Clean the hub bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
41 Treat the mounting seat of the bearing assembly. Use a multipurpose grease.
42 Press the new bearing in the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
AUTODOC recommends:
Check to make sure the wheel hub bearing is positioned correctly. Avoid its
misalignment.
Stop pressing on the surface of the bearing immediately after it has been fitted
into its mounting seat.

43 Install the retaining ring on the steering knuckle. Use round-nose pliers.
44 Dismantle the inner bearing race that is remaining on the hub. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a bearing
separator.
46 Install the wheel hub on the steering knuckle. Use a bush and bearing driver set.
47 Treat the shock strut mounting seat on the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

49 Support the steering knuckle.
50 Fix the shock absorber strut on the steering knuckle. Use a hammer.
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging
assemblies and mechanisms.

53 Tighten the lower fasteners of the suspension strut. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55
Nm torque.
54 Treat the splines of the driveshaft CV joint. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
57 Tighten the fastener that connects the suspension arm to the ball joint. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque
wrench. Tighten it to 45 Nm torque.
59 Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #36. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 325 Nm torque.

60 Install a new hub nut cotter pin. Use a hammer.
61 Install the ABS sensor on the steering knuckle and secure it. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
63 Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque
wrench. Tighten it to 35 nm torque.

65 Tighten the ABS sensor wiring bracket. Use a drive socket #10. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 10 Nm torque.
67 Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.

69 Tighten the brake disc fasteners. Use a Phillips screwdriver. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 10 Nm torque.

74 Install the fastening bolts (2 pieces).
75 Tighten the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use Torx T55. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
77 Treat the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Treat the steering knuckle fasteners. Treat
the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Treat the fasteners connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle. Use
copper grease.
78 Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use high-temperature ceramic grease.

79 Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: wheel bearing – PEUGEOT 405 I Saloon (15B). After applying the
spray, wait a few minutes.
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.

82 Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque
wrench. Tighten it to 90 nm torque.
AUTODOC recommends:
Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and refill if necessary.
AUTODOC recommends:
Without starting the engine, press the brake pedal several times until you feel
significant resistance.
