Learnings From Pune's Walk and Cycle Analysis

Today, when most cities are planning a citywide walking and cycling scale-up, it is critical to assess and reflect on the usability, accessibility and safety of these infrastructures. Are people even using the infrastructure to its maximum potential? If not, then what are the factors deterring them from doing so? And lastly, is there any scope for intervention or improvement to get them back "on track"? This presentation highlights Pune's journey to answer these questions through the "Pune's Wal

What is this Assessment?

Evaluation of street design

with help of
standard set of indicators
Why should we assess our streets?

Assess usability Measure impact Informed decision-making

through data
Analyse gaps in Measure impact of the -Address the gaps while redesigning streets
infrastructure that are street before and after -Create site-responsive Healthy Streets designs
hampering the re-designing for streets under consideration
usability
How will this help the city?

Articulating street Identifying gaps in Creating a city wide Crafting effective

budgets and create existing practices in interactive GIS narratives for
funding provisions for designing and database communications and
scaling up street implementing streets outreach
design

Meeting with PMC to shortlist the streets

11 streets—with Right-of-Way (ROW) exceeding 24m—from

different zones of the city were selected in consultation with
engineers from the Pune Municipal Corporation. These streets
selected are:

Assessment through 3 type of surveys

Design Observation Perception

surveys surveys surveys
Is the street design efficient How is the street being used? What do the people think
and as per standards? about the street?

*Design indicators are based

on IRC 103 & Pune USDG
Design survey- to understand design efficiency
Design Checklist

LOS- Levels of service based on

IRC, USDG, etc

Design Matrix
Observation survey- to understand user activity patterns

Activity mapping Pedestrian movement Infrastructural

Vehicular volume Pedestrian patterns conditions
counts volume counts
Perception surveys- to understand people's opinions about the street
Cumulative scoring based on all surveys helps to understand the severity of the need for intervention on the
streets. The scoring of streets can be improved by intervening accordingly.
