The developmental method is used in developmental psychology to study changes in behavior from birth to death. It observes how physical, social, moral, language, and emotional development are influenced by heredity and environment. There are three key techniques used - normative investigations which describe characteristics at specific ages, longitudinal studies which observe the same individuals over long periods of time, and cross-sectional studies. The developmental method helps assess genetic influences on behavior and identify problems, but it is time-consuming and requires a strong research design.

PSYCHOLOGY
Methods of Psychology:
Psychology is termed as the scientific study of human
behavior. Special tools and procedures help us in gathering and organizing its subject matter or the essential facts about behavior.
These procedures are termed as methods, which are used
to study human behavior.
The important methods of Psychology are:
1. Introspection/ Self Observation Method
2. Observation Method 3. Experimental Method 4. Survey Method 5. Test Method 6. Case Study Method 7. Developmental/Genetic Method Developmental method
“observing the period of growth”
• Most of our behaviours are the result of earlier
experiences. In some cases when we need to understand some behaviour we need to know their developmental aspects also.
• It studies growth and changes in behavior in terms of its
development from birth till death and influence of heredity and environment in the development of the person’s behavior and conditions favorable & unfavorable for normal development and abnormality.
Used in the field of developmental psychology
Physical, social, moral, language and emotions are
observed in the children
Developmental method uses the following
techniques: o Normative investigations o Longitudinal study o Cross sectional study Normative investigation :
It describes something that is characteristic of specific
age These observation provides norms. Example of normative investigation is Bayley scale of infant development.
Longitudinal study :
In this study change in the same individual or group are
studied over a long period of time. In it researcher observe for changes in specific characteristic such as language, personality or intelligence. Advantages of developmental method: • Helps assess genetic or hereditary influences on behaviour. • Helps in treatment. • Helps identify the associated problems.
