Learning J Unit 5, Math

The document discusses exponential and logarithmic functions. It reflects on key concepts like exponential growth, natural exponential function, and rational exponents that are needed to understand these concepts. The simplest exponential function is f(x) = bx and the simplest logarithmic function is logbx, where b is any positive real number not equal to 1. Many real-world phenomena can be modeled as exponential or logarithmic functions, such as investment growth, population expansion, and other numerical computations. Common strategies for graphing these functions include using a calculator or table to identify points and then plotting them on a graph.

UNIT 5: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

Hassan Hussein

Instructor: Dr. Hitesh Verma

15.12 2022
Reflect on the concepts of exponential and logarithmic functions.

The exponential formula is f(x) = ax, where x is a variable and an is a constant that acts as the

base of the function and must be greater than 0. "The transcending number e, or almost 2.71828,

is the most popular exponential base." Byjus, n.d).

What concepts (only the names) did you need to accommodate these new concepts in your mind?

Exponential growth

Polynomial function

natural exponential function

Positive real number

Exponential decay.

Natural base

Rational exponent

What are the simplest exponential and logarithmic functions with base b ≠ 1 you can imagine?

Y=bx and Y=log bx, respectively, are the simplest exponential and logarithmic functions with

base b 1. The basis of the exponential function f(x) =(8) is that x is equal to 8. There are several
real-world events that take place every day that can be understood as exponential or logarithmic

functions. These serve as function models for many complex numerical computations, including

investment, population expansion, and many more. (Abramson,20 17)

In your day to day, is there any occurring fact that can be interpreted as an exponential or

logarithmic function?

In actuality, the formula that my consultant will give me is probably going to be logarithmic if

my objective is to make a million dollars after beginning a firm.

Another one is determining a projectile's velocity and distance, as well as the curved path it will

take upon descending, hitting the target, and destroying it. A logarithmic formula will be mostly

used. The logarithmic function can also be used to estimate an earthquake's magnitude. And to

calculate muzzle velocity during range shooting when the bullet leaves the barrel.

What strategy are you using to get the graph of exponential or logarithmic functions?

A calculator or table is frequently used to identify the points on a logarithmic function graph,

which is the technique I will utilize. I will think of those table columns as input and output. I do

this by simply drawing a T-chart with y and x representing my points. and insert my points on

the axis from the equation that I have. This will help me draw my graph.
