Trigonometric Functions
7.1. Derivative of sin x
The derivative of
y=sin x
y +∆ y =sin ( x+ ∆ x )
¿ sin x cos ∆ x+ cos x sin ∆ x
∆ y =sin x cos ∆ x+cos x sin ∆ x −sin x
¿ cos x sin ∆ x − sin x ¿

From trigonometry we know that sin A= ¿ Hence
2
1 −cos ∆ x =2sin
2
( 12 ∆ x)
so that we may write
∆ y =cos x sin ∆ x −2 sin x si n2 ( 12 ∆ x).
This leads us to

∆y
=cos x
sin ∆ x
− 2sin x
si n2 ( 12 ∆ x)
∆x ∆x ∆x
Or
sin ( 12 ∆ x ) sin 1 ∆ x
∆y
∆x
=cos x
sin ∆ x
∆x
− sin x

∆x

Now

sin ∆ x sin ∆ x
sin ∆ x 2 2
lim =1 , lim =1 , lim =0 ,
∆ x →0 ∆x ∆ x →0 1 ∆ x →0 ∆x

Thus, when we let ∆ x →0 in each member, we obtain

y ' =cos x· 1 −sin x· 1· 0

y ' =cos x
Therefore

It follows that

7.3 Maxima and Minima

Many problems requiring the determination of maxima and minima may be solved very neatly by
expressing the function in terms of trigonometric functions of an angle.
Example (a). Find the shape of the largest rectangle that can be inscribed in a given circle.

x=a cos θ , y =a sin θ

Example (b). A man in a rowboat 6 mi. from the shore desires to reach a point on the shore at a distance
of 10 mi. from his present position. If he can walk 4 mi. per hour and row 2 mi. per hour, in what direction
should he row in order to reach his destination in the shortest possible time?

The time required is
