Using ANSYS to study Impact step by step

By group 2
1. Choose Explicit Dynamics

2. Choose Engineering Data

Due to our car body being made of Aluminum Alloy click on

the plus button and it will show a book symbol next to it.
3. Choose Geometry

Right click on Geometry, choose Import Geometry then

choose “car-crash-step.stp”.
4. Working on Model
Double click on Model and wait for ANSYS to finish loading
your model. You will receive this:
5. Assign material to body

Click on Material, choose Aluminum Alloy.

6. Meshing
Click on Mesh then choose Update and wait. After that you
should receive this:
7. Assign Initial Setting

Right click on Initial Condition, choose Insert then choose

Velocity. Select the car body, click on Geometry and choose
Apply.

Click on Define By and choose Components

Click on the X component and fill in your velocity. In our

case since the car was crashing into the wall at the velocity of
30m/s we filled in -30m/s.
8. Assign Analysis setting.
Click on Analysis setting, choose the back of the obstacle
then right click, choose Insert and click on fixed support.

Choose the edge of the car body (During this process you may
need to zoom in the car body and flip it over to cover all the
lines.) Right click, choose Insert then Displacement.
Click on the Y component and fill it with 0. You will receive
this.

Go to Analysis Setting, click on End Time and set the

duration your simulation lasts, in our case it’s 0.0007. You
will receive this.

Scroll down and click on the plus button on the Output

control, choose Result Number of Points and fill with 100.
9. Determine the result
According to your need you can solve for various results. In
this case we will solve for Total Deformation and
Equivalent Stress.

Right click on Solution, choose Insert, Deformation and

then Total. Similarly for Stress only this time choose
Equivalent. Then click on Solve and wait for the result.
You should received two result similar to this:

Total Deformation
Equivalent Stress
