Understanding the Business

The first week of my internship was all about learning what the organization does and how it functions. Akij
Footwear Limited is a 100% export based manufacturing company that produces different types of shoes for
men, women, and kids. And exports in Japan, Germany, and the USA.

To produce the required amount of Shoes, the brand has a manufacturing plant located in Savar, Dhaka. Around
800 labors work 8 hours a day in different units of Production line. The production line has a total of 5 different
units. They are as follows: the cutting section, preparation section, 4 sewing lines, 2 lasting lines, and a packing
line. The whole process starts from cutting the leather and ends with packaging. Apart from the production
facility, the plant also has a quality control department, product development department, Merchandising
department, HR & Admin Department, Chemical unit, and an Inventory.

Key learning of the week

In my first week, I have worked at the Merchandising department. In this office, we communicate with the major
stakeholders such as buyers and suppliers to operate the business properly. In this week, I have learned how to
communicate with the buyers. Providing regular updates to buyers regarding the work in progress and
maintaining regular communication is one of the most essential tasks of the business. All the buyers have
separate online portals of their own. Once we get a confirmation of the purchase order, they provide us the portal
access by sharing a password. Every necessary documents that are required to understand their demand is
available in the portal. As soon as the production begins, we have to keep updating how many pairs of shoes
have been produced and how many pairs remaining on a daily basis. Furthermore, we have to report about the
defected shoes so that they can calculate the ratio of unqualified shoes. This ratio is also essential for us as well
to understand our production efficiency.

Maintaining regular communications with the buyers regarding the regular progress of work is essential for both
the parties. It helps the business to stay ahead on schedule and deliver the goods on time and also it’s helpful for
the buyer to get notified about the development regularly so that they can also be safe and do not have to face
any unexpected event at the last moment.
