There are 4 (four) questions. Answer 3 (three) of them. Question 1 and 3 are compulsory. The symbols
have their usual meanings. Marks of each question and corresponding CO and PO are written in the
brackets. Note that, the value of y is the last two digit of your student ID.

1. The following beam is loaded and has the support


conditions as shown in Fig. 1. Consider the value of P is
20y kN and L is (2000+10y) mm. Answer the followings:
a. Identify the support types and construct the free-body 5.0 5.0 [1] [1]
diagram of ABCD beam.
b. Determine the reaction forces at support A, C and D. 5.0 5.0 [3] [2]

2. A simple I-beam supports a uniform load of intensity q =
3.0 k/ft on a span of length L=(10+y/10) ft (Fig. 2). The
dimensions of the cross section are h =10.5 in., b = 5.81
in., tf =0.51 in., and tw = 0.30 in. Answer the followings.

(a) Calculate the support reactions and draw SFD of the 5.0 3.0+2.0 [3,4] [2]
beam.
(b) Calculate the shear force at section A–A located at 4.5 2.5+2.0 [1,4] [1,2]
distance d = (2+0.01y) ft from the right end of the beam.
(c) Calculate the shear stresses at different levels (marked 10.0 10.0 [5] [4]
in red lines in Fig. 2b) of the cross-section A–A and draw
the stress distribution over the cross-section.
(d) Determine the maximum shear stress, τmax on cross 2.0 2.0 [5] [4]
section A–A.
(e) Calculate the shear stress τ at point B on the cross 3.5 3.5 [5] [4]
section. Point B is located at a distance a = (1+ 0.01y) in.

3. Assume that a simply supported beam as shown in Fig. 2
(a) is 4 m long and carries a uniform load of intensity q
kN/m. The cross section of that beam is shown in Fig. 3.
If the beam is made from a material having an allowable
tensile and compressive stress of (σallow)t = (100+y) MPa
and (σallow)c = (100+2y) MPa, respectively, determine the
followings.
(a) Maximum allowable internal moment M that can be 7.0 7.0 [5] [4]
applied to the beam.
(b) What is the allowable load qallow? 2.5 2.5 [5] [4]
(c) Draw the BMD of the beam for qallow ? 5.5 3.5+2.0 [3,4] [2]

(d) If the uniform load q kN/m is replaced by two point 5.0 [5] [4]
loads applied at one-third and two-third of the whole
length of the beam, respectively, determine the maximum
value of each point load, Pallow.

4. A simply supported beam AB with span length L = 6 m


supports a concentrated load P = 10+(5y) kN acting at c
= (2+0.01y) m from the right-hand support. The beam is
made of steel and has a rectangular cross section of width
b = 75 mm and height h = 150 mm. Answer the
followings:
(a) Calculate the support reactions and draw SFD of the 5.0 3.0+2.0 [3,4] [2]
beam.
(b) Calculate the shear force at section A–A which is 2 m 4.5 2.5+2.0 [1,4] [1,2]
away from the left support.
(c) Calculate principal planes, principal stresses, and 15.5 2.5+7.0+ [5] [4]
maximum shearing stresses and corresponding normal 6.0
stresses at A–A section.
