Purpose: Outline the potential total dissolved solids contribution points or activities
and opportunities to reduce the overall TDS load in our effluent thereby reducing
the amount of TDS entering the groundwater.

Incoming TDS: Tree Top Prosser Plant’s incoming water is from the city municipal
system. The city provides water from wells.
 Contact city for information to determine the TDS load contribution from the
incoming water.

Water treatment systems: Through mutual cooperation with the water treatment
company determine current contribution of the following systems.
 Water Softeners: The softeners were upgraded during this permit cycle and
there is a difference in regeneration of the salt brine cycles. Determine the
TDS reduction with the upgraded softeners
 Cooling tower and condenser chemistry: All cooling towers and condensers
on site currently are treated with chemistry to prevent biological growth.
Determine the current TDS load from each tower and research chemistry
reduction and substitution to reduce loading, if none is available look for all
known and reasonable technologies (AKART).
 Boiler systems: Review all boiler systems and chemical additions for proper
concentrations and chemistry. Determine the current TDS load from the
boiler and research chemistry reduction and substitution to reduce loading,
if none is available look for all known and reasonable technologies
(AKART).
 Condensate water recovery and reuse: Currently condensate water from
the juice evaporators is treated and reused in the plant in numerus locations
in substitution of city well water. Determine the TDS reduction with use of
condensate water vs city water. Explore other areas in the plant for
opportunities to expand the use of condensate water use.

Food Equipment Sanitation Systems: Through guidance and evaluation with the
current plant Sanitation chemical supply company determine current contribution
of the following systems.
 Chemical dispensing upgrade: Our current dispensing system does not
automatically dilute to the proper concentrations and allows employees to
dispense any chemicals and concentrations. Plan to change to a new
allocation system in May that dilutes to our prescribed concentrations,
tracks chemical usage by employee, controls chemical allowances by
employee. Automatic reporting will provide volumes, areas in the plant and
dispensing by employee. Monthly usage reports will allow tracking of
behavioral and system deficiencies that will be corrected as ongoing
continuous improvement.
 Sanitation chemical arsenal evaluation: Review all sanitation chemicals and
determine if there are like chemicals that can be substituted in that have a
lower TDS value but achieve the same sanitation outcome.
 Sanitation Clean in Place (CIP) circuit mapping: Review all CIP circuits in
the facility and determine how many are currently single pass circuits vs
recirculated system. Determine costs associated with upgrading the single
pass circuits to recirculating systems. Evaluate all recirculating systems to
determine both water and chemistry usage to reduce TDS per clean.

Processing Facility Effluent Constituent Study: Provided our water treatment

company with effluent samples and annual waste water information.
 TDS Constituent make up: Based off the findings from the constituent study,
determine the sources of the different contributors. Develop methods and
procedures to reduce the overall TDS. As projects are identified, further
TDS evaluation of the source in question will be conducted. With completion
of the projects, the same TDS evaluation will be conducted to verify the root
source was identified correctly and either reduced or eliminated.
Spray Field Chemical Land Application and Watering:
Implement recommended chemical application changes from our Soil Scientist to
our spray field.
 Current practice is to apply sulfuric acid through the spray field center pivot
and to add land application two times annually of powdered gypsum to
assist in the soil composition and pH. Recommendation is to change to a
granular application of elemental sulfur, gypsum, and fumaric acid; which
should result in a longer, slower release than the powder and liquid form.
This will allow the soil and plants to take up more of the application reducing
the amount that reaches the ground water as TDS.
 Sample the incoming irrigation water form Sunnyside Valley Irrigation
District (SVID). Determine the TDS from the incoming water that is used to
supplement the waste water supply during the summer months when there
is not enough waste water to spray.
