Top professional wheelchair tennis players have heavily criticised a decision by US Open
officials to scrap the wheelchair event from this year's tournament as "disgusting discrimination".
Earlier this week, tournament organisers confirmed that a shortened US Open will go ahead - from
August 31 to September 13 in New York - without fans because of the coronavirus pandemic, and
that the wheelchair event will not be organised in order to minimise the number of players,
considering health concerns.
Australian Paralympic champion Dylan Alcott said the wheelchair omission was "blatant
discrimination" and was made without consulting the players. "I thought I did enough to qualify - 2x
champion, number 1 in the world," the 10-time Grand Slam winner wrote on Twitter. "But
unfortunately I missed the only thing that mattered, being able to walk. Disgusting discrimination."
The International Tennis Federation (ITF), the governing body of wheelchair tennis, said it
"understands and shares the disappointment" caused by the decision. Meanwhile, the International
Paralympic Committee (IPC) urged the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to reconsider it. "We
appreciate that the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown up multiple challenges for sport event
organisers all around the world, but such challenges should not be used as an excuse to discriminate
against a group of players and not offer inclusive competition for all," IPC President Andrew Parsons
said in a statement.
Question 40: How does Dylan Alcott feel about the decision to cancel the US Open wheelchair event?
D. He is angry since the organisers only discussed the decision with other players.
Question 42: Which of the following is TRUE about the USTA’ decision to omit the US Open wheel
chair event, according to the passage?
B. The IPC, which governs wheelchair tennis, has suggested that the USTA reconsider it.
C. Like many wheelchair tennis players, the ITF also considers it as a disappointing one.
D. The USTA will most likely reverse its decision as pressure from the IPC intensifies.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
The narrow lanes inside the slum in east Mumbai where Swati Patil lives flood every year during
the monsoon season of July and August. Homes remain flooded for days and many people pile all
their belongings on beds floating in the water, she says. But this monsoon season, Patil and her
neighbors have one more thing to fear: the coronavirus.
Although slums cover only about 8 percent of Mumbai's total area, they are home to some 40
percent of Mumbai's population of more than 20 million. Here, people live in cramped quarters and
share dirty public toilets. Furthermore, sanitation and social distancing in slums will become even
harder to maintain during the monsoon season, says Rama Shyam, program director at the Mumbai-
based nonprofit Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action.
The pandemic is also making it tough for the authorities to prepare the slums for the monsoon
season. "Traditionally, city officials go door-to-door in the slum pockets and they basically arm
people with messages on monsoon-related illnesses," says Shyam. Such awareness campaigns are
part of pre-monsoon preparations that Mumbai's authorities undertake each spring, which also
include unclogging stormwater drains to prevent flooding. But amid the COVID-19 pandemic, these
have all taken a backseat, says urban affairs researcher Dhaval Desai.
Mumbai’s healthcare system will also be under immense pressure. Hundreds of people in
Mumbai get sick with malaria and dengue fever each year, especially during or just after the
monsoon. This year, the burden of monsoon-related illnesses comes at a time when Mumbai's health
system is already overwhelmed by COVID-19. Public hospitals are severely understaffed, doctors say,
and there are reports of patients dying after hospitals refused to admit them due to shortage of beds.
Consequently, authorities say they are assigning hospitals to treat non-COVID patients exclusively.
Meanwhile, Desai is wondering how slums that are right along Mumbai's beaches will fare.
"Every monsoon, during high tide, at least the first two to three rows of all slum huts have to be
evacuated otherwise they will be swept away by the sea waves," Desai says. "They all come and live on
the streets." When they're trying to survive and save their home, he says, social distancing and an
invisible virus will be the last thing on their minds.
Question 44: Which best serves as the title for the passage?
Question 45: Which of the following is TRUE about slums in Mumbai, according to paragraph 2?
B. They are the living place of more than 20 million residents in Mumbai.
C. Living and sanitary conditions in these slums are extremely poor.
Question 46: The word “arm” in paragraph 3 can be best replaced by ___________.
Question 48: As stated in paragraph 3, each spring, Mumbai’s authorities would __________.
Question 50: Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Dirty public toilets are the most severe sanitation problem in many of Mumbai’s slums.
B. City officials in Mumbai are trying to figure out how monsoon preparations can be resumed.
C. Those who live in Mumbai’s coastal slums may become more vulnerable to COVID-19.
D. Actions taken by Mumbai’s authorities will not be very effective, especially in the long run.
