Key functionalities of the Knorr-Bremse EPB

Category Description
Park & Release Manual Park: Apply Parking Brake of the vehicle via pulling the hand control
unit (HCU) manually.
Manual Release: Release Parking Brake of the vehicle via pushing HCU
manually.
Auto Park: Applies Parking Brake automatically e.g. if driver switches off
ignition.
Auto Release: Releases Parking Brake automatically if transmission readiness
is signalled.
Gradual Brake Control Progressive Brake: In case of a principal brake system failure of the service
brake, EPB is able to brake the vehicle by pulling the HCU. Pressure in spring
brake chambers is controlled proportional to HCU stroke.
Proportional Braking EPB + EBS / ABS with ESP: XBR demand is given to Brake ECU analogue to
HCU stroke. EBS / ABS system brakes the vehicle.
Auto Hold Auto Hold Function: Auto Hold Function safes the last brake pressure when
vehicle comes to standstill and keeps it there without actuation of the brake
pedal. Vehicle will get in motion again after pushing the accelerator pedal.
(Mainly function in combination with EBS and EPB as backup to prevent
rolling of vehicle).
Trailer Trailer Control: Trailer is braked in park position with trailer service brakes.
Trailer Test: Trailer test function makes it possible for the driver to check if
tractor can keep vehicle combination in standstill or if trailer is not braked.
Workshop Workshop Mode: Special case of AutoPark. Disables automatic apply of
parking brake. Used during service maintenance.

Key advantages of the EPB compared to conventional parking brake systems

• Lower risk of unintended spring brake application through broken tubes
or fittings
• Interlock prevents full activation of the parking brake while vehicle is in
motion
• Automatic park brake application when vehicle is parked (can be deacti-
vated) to avoid roll-away of vehicles
• Hill start is supported by Automatic park brake release
• Dashboard integrated flat lever reduces risk of injury in case of an accident
Lower installation and handling effort • Less components
• Less part numbers
• Lower number of fittings and pre-assemblies
• Lower pipe length
• Lower pneumatic logistics efforts
High flexibility • Synergy with Knorr-Bremse EBS system
