A. MODIFICATIONS

NOTE: As per EASA IR 21, a minor change is one that has no appreciable effect on the
mass, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics affecting
the airworthiness of the product. All other changes are major changes.
B. REASON
(1) History
Some operators have reported a disconnection of the Nose Landing Gear (NLG) torque
link on in-service aircraft, that are post MOD No. 153020J3396 (modify NLG torque link
apex pin) or post Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400.
The disconnection is due to apex pin and nut detachment. Inspection has indicated
that threads on the apex pin and nut have been damaged by corrosion. The affected
aircraft have accumulated more than 5 years/10000 Flight Cycles (FC)/13000 Flight
Hours (FH) following MOD No. 153020J3396 embodiment or Service Bulletin No. Ref.
SB A320-32-1400 accomplishment.
The apex pin and nut have undergone metallurgical laboratory testing which has
confirmed that the corrosion was due to the degradation of the cadmium plating on
the threads of the apex pin and nut. Degradation of cadmium plating can mainly occur
due to the consequence of repetitive removal/installation of the apex pin assembly.
A one time inspection performed by several operators following the reported NLG
torque-link disconnection events revealed signs of corrosion on several other aircraft
in the fleet.
It was found that all the affected aircraft have embodied MOD No. 153020J3396 or
accomplished Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400 for 4 or more years.
(2) Objective/Action
This Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) recommends checking the NLG torque link apex
pin and nut threads for corrosion at the next opportunity, but not later than timescale
specified in the PLANNING INFORMATION paragraph 1.E.(2).
If no corrosion is found, this inspection must be repeated within a period not
exceeding 18 months.
Following replacement of the apex pin and nut by a new apex pin Part Number (PN)
D68797 and nut PN D68798 this inspection should be repeated in accordance with
the Compliance Table 1 requirements applicable following the accomplishment of
Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400 or embodiment of MOD No. 153020J3396 in
production line.

SUMMARY
The Ref. AMM Task 32-21-00-220-802 for inspection of the NLG torque link center
hinge pin has been revised to improve the instructions for cleaning parts prior to the
inspection.
The Ref. AMM Task 32-21-27-400-002 for installation of the NLG torque link center
hinge pin has also been revised to improve the instructions for cleaning parts prior to
the inspection for corrosion and application of new grease.
It is essential to ensure that old grease is carefully removed prior to performing the
inspection, and that new grease is homogeneously applied on all the pin threads and
splines when re-installing the parts.
This inspection can also be done in shop in accordance with Ref. SAFRAN LANDING
SYSTEMS (SAS) (F0189) VSB 580-32-3209 but operators have to refer to this ISB Ref.
SB A320-32-1500 for information about compliance time.
(3) Advantages
The accomplishment of this Service Bulletin allows to identify corroded apex pins and
nuts and perform corrective actions, as necessary, to prevent the possibility of in-
service disconnection of the NLG torque link.

(Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400) or MOD No. 161203J3646 (Service
Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1425) or MOD No. 157720J4086 (Service Bulletin No.
Ref. SB A320-32-1438) is embodied.
NOTE: This Service Bulletin is subject to an open-end applicability, meaning that

subsequent aircraft from those in the current applicability are also impacted.
A revision will be ordered only on operator request if they intend to embody
this Service Bulletin on their MSN not yet included in the current applicability.
Depending on the request date, an RDAF could be provided while waiting for SB

CONF 001 is applicable for all the aircraft affected by this Service Bulletin as a
standard configuration.
B. CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS
None
C. REASON
(1) History
Some operators have reported a disconnection of the Nose Landing Gear (NLG) torque
link on in-service aircraft, that are post MOD No. 153020J3396 (modify NLG torque link
apex pin) or post Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400.
The disconnection is due to apex pin and nut detachment. Inspection has indicated
that threads on the apex pin and nut have been damaged by corrosion. The affected
aircraft have accumulated more than 5 years/10000 Flight Cycles (FC)/13000 Flight
Hours (FH) following MOD No. 153020J3396 embodiment or Service Bulletin No. Ref.
SB A320-32-1400 accomplishment.
The apex pin and nut have undergone metallurgical laboratory testing which has
confirmed that the corrosion was due to the degradation of the cadmium plating on
the threads of the apex pin and nut. Degradation of cadmium plating can mainly occur
due to the consequence of repetitive removal/installation of the apex pin assembly.
A one time inspection performed by several operators following the reported NLG
torque-link disconnection events revealed signs of corrosion on several other aircraft
in the fleet.
It was found that all the affected aircraft have embodied MOD No. 153020J3396 or
accomplished Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400 for 4 or more years.
(2) Objective/Action
This Inspection Service Bulletin (ISB) recommends checking the NLG torque link apex
pin and nut threads for corrosion at the next opportunity, but not later than timescale
specified in the PLANNING INFORMATION paragraph 1.E.(2).
If no corrosion is found, this inspection must be repeated within a period not
exceeding 18 months.
Following replacement of the apex pin and nut by a new apex pin Part Number (PN)
D68797 and nut PN D68798 this inspection should be repeated in accordance with
the Compliance Table 1 requirements applicable following the accomplishment of
Service Bulletin No. Ref. SB A320-32-1400 or embodiment of MOD No. 153020J3396 in
production line.
The Ref. AMM Task 32-21-00-220-802 for inspection of the NLG torque link center
hinge pin has been revised to improve the instructions for cleaning parts prior to the
inspection.
The Ref. AMM Task 32-21-27-400-002 for installation of the NLG torque link center
hinge pin has also been revised to improve the instructions for cleaning parts prior to
the inspection for corrosion and application of new grease.
It is essential to ensure that old grease is carefully removed prior to performing the
inspection, and that new grease is homogeneously applied on all the pin threads and
splines when re-installing the parts.
This inspection can also be done in shop in accordance with Ref. SAFRAN LANDING
SYSTEMS (SAS) (F0189) VSB 580-32-3209 but operators have to refer to this ISB Ref.
SB A320-32-1500 for information about compliance time.

(3) Advantages
The accomplishment of this Service Bulletin allows to identify corroded apex pins and
nuts and perform corrective actions, as necessary, to prevent the possibility of in-
service disconnection of the NLG torque link.

G. MANPOWER
The manpower estimates given in this Service Bulletin are based on the direct labor cost to
do the work. These estimates assume that the work will be done by experienced personnel,
and may need to be revised upwards to suit operator’s circumstances. The estimates do not

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY ALL THE WARNINGS AND ALL THE CAUTIONS
INCLUDED IN THE REFERENCED PROCEDURES.
CAUTION: ALWAYS OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW TO KEEP ELECTRICAL

WIRING IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION (ELECTRICALLY AND MECHANICALLY
SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO A MAINTENANCE WORK, REPAIRS OR
MODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING, COMPONENTS AND
THE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO THIS:
- PUT PROTECTION, SUCH AS PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHS, ETC., AS
NECESSARY ON WIRING AND COMPONENTS.
- REGULARLY REMOVE ALL SHAVINGS, UNWANTED MATERIAL AND
OTHER CONTAMINATION.
THESE PRECAUTIONS WILL DECREASE THE RISK OF CONTAMINATION AND
DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING INSTALLATION.

Procedure
NOTE: For the basic Aircraft configuration, refer to AMM Chapter “Introduction -
Aircraft status for maintenance" in Manual Front Matter section.
(a) Make sure that the aircraft is electrically grounded, refer to Ref. AMM Task 12-34-
24-869-002.
(b) Put the warning notices in position on the cockpit, on the right center instrument
Panel 400VU, to tell persons not to operate the landing gear control lever.
(c) Put the warning notices in position on the steering handwheels (Captain (CAPT)
and First Officer (F/O)) and on the brake pedals to tell persons not to operate
them.
(d) As necessary, use the applicable safety barriers, specified by the operator's
instructions and the local regulations.
(e) On the Parking (PARK) Brake (BRK) section of the Panel 110VU, make sure that
the control switch is in the OFF position.
(f) Make sure that the wheel chocks are in position.

Procedure

(a) Standard practices given in this procedure:
1 For the identification of zones, refer to Ref. AMM 06-20-00, Page Block 001.
2 Tag all the parts you must remove and retain to make the subsequent
installation easier.
3 Put all the retained hardware in identified plastic bags and attach the bags
to the related unit.
(b) If torque link center pin can be turned freely, proceed to the step (e) to do the
removal and inspection with weight on wheels.
(c) If torque link center pin cannot be turned freely, aircraft should be moved
straight forward 10 metres to unload the torque links, refer to Ref. AMM 09-10-
00. If the pin can be turned freely, proceed to the step (e) to do the removal and
inspection with weight on wheels.
(d) If torque link center pin cannot be turned freely and aircraft cannot be moved
straight forward 10 metres, or moving the aircraft 10 metres does not enable the
pin to be turned freely:
1 Lift the nose gear until the wheels are off the ground and lower the aircraft
on its wheels, refer to Ref. AMM Task 07-11-00-581-003 and Ref. AMM Task
07-11-00-586-001.
NOTE: The jacking at the NLG is used to release the residual loads in the
torque links.
(e) Remove the NLG torque link apex pin and nut, refer to SHEET 1 and Ref. AMM
Task 32-21-27-000-002:

Depending on the Inspection Result, Replace the Apex Pin and Nut
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY ALL THE WARNINGS AND ALL THE CAUTIONS
INCLUDED IN THE REFERENCED PROCEDURES.
CAUTION: ALWAYS OBEY THE PRECAUTIONS THAT FOLLOW TO KEEP ELECTRICAL

WIRING IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION (ELECTRICALLY AND MECHANICALLY
SERVICEABLE). WHEN YOU DO A MAINTENANCE WORK, REPAIRS OR
MODIFICATIONS, ALWAYS KEEP ELECTRICAL WIRING, COMPONENTS AND
THE WORK AREA AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE. TO DO THIS:
- PUT PROTECTION, SUCH AS PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHS, ETC., AS
NECESSARY ON WIRING AND COMPONENTS.
- REGULARLY REMOVE ALL SHAVINGS, UNWANTED MATERIAL AND
OTHER CONTAMINATION.
THESE PRECAUTIONS WILL DECREASE THE RISK OF CONTAMINATION AND
DAMAGE TO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING INSTALLATION.
IF THERE IS CONTAMINATION, REFER TO Ref. ESPM 20-55-00.
NOTE: The accomplishment instructions of this Service Bulletin include procedures given in
other documents or in other sections of the Service Bulletin. When the words “refer to”
are used and the operator has a procedure accepted by the local authority he belongs to,
the accepted alternative procedure can be used. When the words “in accordance with”
are used then the given procedure must be followed.
NOTE: The access and close-up instructions, not comprising return to service tests, in this
Service Bulletin do not constitute or affect the technical intent of the Service Bulletin.
Operators can therefore, as deemed necessary, omit or add access and/or close-up steps
to add flexibility to their maintenance operations as long as the technical intent of the
Service Bulletin is met within the set parameters.

NOTE: This Service Bulletin contains the instructions for the on-aircraft maintenance necessary
to ensure the continued airworthiness of the aircraft.

Procedure
NOTE: For the basic Aircraft configuration, refer to AMM Chapter “Introduction -
Aircraft status for maintenance" in Manual Front Matter section.
(a) Make sure that the aircraft is electrically grounded, refer to Ref. AMM Task 12-34-
24-869-002.
(b) Put the warning notices in position on the cockpit, on the right center instrument
Panel 400VU, to tell persons not to operate the landing gear control lever.
(c) Put the warning notices in position on the steering handwheels (Captain (CAPT)
and First Officer (F/O)) and on the brake pedals to tell persons not to operate
them.
(d) As necessary, use the applicable safety barriers, specified by the operator's
instructions and the local regulations.
(e) On the Parking Brake (BRK) section of the Panel 110VU, make sure that the
control switch is in the OFF position.
(f) Make sure that the wheel chocks are in position.

Procedure

(b) If torque link center pin can be turned freely, proceed to the step (e) to do the
replacement of NLG torque link apex pin and nut with weight on wheels.
(c) If torque link center pin cannot be turned freely, aircraft should be moved
straight forward 10 metres to unload the torque links, refer to Ref. AMM 09-10-
00. If the pin can be turned freely, proceed to the step (e) to do the replacement
of NLG torque link apex pin and nut with weight on wheels.
(d) If torque link center pin cannot be turned freely and aircraft cannot be moved
straight forward 10 metres, or moving the aircraft 10 metres does not enable the
pin to be turned freely:
1 Lift the nose gear until the wheels are off the ground and lower the aircraft
on its wheels, refer to Ref. AMM Task 07-11-00-581-003 and Ref. AMM Task
07-11-00-586-001.
NOTE: The jacking at the NLG is used to release the residual loads in the
torque links.
(e) Replace the NLG torque link apex pin and nut:
1 Remove, refer to SHEET 1 and Ref. AMM Task 32-21-27-000-002.
