ADOLESCENCE

 The state or process of growing up


 A stage of development prior to maturity

Adolescence, from 13 to 19 years old is considered as a transition from childhood to


adulthood, a passage from one stage to another (Hurlock, 1982).

DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENCE

 Physiological
 Psychological
 Cognitive
 Spiritual
 Moral
 Social

HORMONES

 Androgens and Estrogens are hormones or chemical substance produced by endocrine


glands that actively affect physical growth and development.

TESTOSTERONE

 Is an androgen that is strongly associated in the physical maturation of boys.


 Height
 Sexual desires
 Deepening of voice
 Development of genitals

ESTRADIOL

 Is an estrogen that is strongly associated in the physical development of girls


 Breast
 Widening of hips
 Uterine development
SEBACEOUS GLANDS

 A small gland in the skin which secretes a lubricating oily matter (sebum) into the hair
follicles to lubricate the skin and hair
 Acne and other skin problems
 Body odor

PHYSICAL CHANGES – PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

PHYSICAL ATTRACTIVENESS

 Is one of the major concerns of teenagers.

BODY CATHEXIS

 Refers to the satisfaction and dissatisfaction with one’s body. They do things that prove
that they are attractive.

IMPLICATIONS OF PHYSICAL CHANGES

1. Concerns more about their physical appearance may also increase.


2. May realize that some people treat those who are attractive better than those who are less
attractive.
3. It also explains why some teenagers are shy and timid in appearing in public as well as
expressing their ideas.
4. Some teenagers lack and low of self-confidence.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

 It refers to the progression of one’s ability to think analytically, understand and reason
out. During adolescence, your brain goes through significant structural development
stages that it develop the ability to think critically, creatively and interconnect things in
relation to problem-solving.
COGNITIVE/INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Ask a lot of questions, not only about yourself but also about everything around you.
2. No longer comfortable with simple explanations but you look for a deeper meaning of
things.
3. Express doubts about their parents parenting style as well as their beliefs, principles of
their family.
4. Compare the parenting styles at home and that of peers.

PSYCHOLOGICAL/EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

 It is a learning stage on how to understand, appreciate oneself. It also deals with stress
and how to handle emotions. It is also a transition period wherein teenagers get easily
excited with some situations, but you also tend to easily show your irritation.

INDICATIONS THAT YOU HAVE FINALLY ACHIEVED EMOTIONAL MATURITY:

1. Know how and when to express emotions in a socially acceptable manner.


2. In a difficult situation exercise critical thinking and not being emotionally carried away.
3. Less reactive to provocations and emotionally heated situations.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT “INTERACTIONAL SELF”

 Social change can be defines as the way in which human interactions, community duties
or engagements, relationships, behaviour patterns, and cultural norms change over time.
 You begin to rely more on your friends or peer groups for support than on your family.
However, you are more prone to peer pressure.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Your attitude, speech, interests, appearance and behaviour are greatly influenced by
friends as you spend more time outside your home.
2. You may prefer few friends and intimate relationship and become curious about
relationships with the opposite gender and experience physical attraction.
3. You are more socially competent and tend to participate more in social gathering which is
manifested in your ability to carry on conversation, behave properly in front of people
and have confidence to share talents.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

 The attribute of a person’s consciousness and beliefs, including the values and virtues
that guide and put meaning into a person’s life.
 You begin to have interest in spiritual concerns. You start pondering on questions
concerning existence, essence, spirituality, and religion

MORAL DEVELOPMENT

 It means to a set of guiding principles that direct a person in the pursuit of what is right or
wrong and what is good or bad.
