Narrative essay - A Misunderstanding (A)

“Ring!” The familiar sound of my alarm clock shrilled. The first

light of dawn fell on the rusty roof of my house. The sound of sparrows
chattering signaled the beginning of yet another day. l usually woke up
late on Sunday mornings and I spent a few blissful minutes lazing in bed.
But the smell of breakfast being prepared was enough to drag me out of
my bed, for I was famished.

As I was having my breakfast, the phone rang. l got to the phone

quickly. It was Jason. He called to ask me to go to the shopping centre
with him. Without any delay, I promised to meet him at the bus stop.

At the bus stop, I waited patiently for Jason's arrival. Slowly the
excitement turned to boredom. Time seemed to crawl. After what
seemed like an eternity, Jason walked briskly towards the bus stop.
Soon, the bus came and we clambered up the bus cautiously.

The crowd in the shopping centre had swelled and the air was
getting a bit stifling. In the video arcade, the youngsters were hunched
over the consoles, frantically working their fingers to beat the
electronics machines and the addicts forked out large sums of money
feeding them to continue their games. There were many stunning girls in
sexy clothes with a lot of sex appeal strolling leisurely among the crowd.
As we passed by a clothes sales, I could hardly believe my eyes when I
saw respectable looking adults involved in what looked like a gold rush.
They were literally tearing at the clothes on sale.No quarter was given or
asked. It was sheer madness. Manners, courtesy and shyness were
thrown aside as they grabbed at the dirt-cheap clothes.

After choosing our things, Jason and I went to the cashier to pay
for our purchase. There was a long queue at the counter. We queued up
and waited patiently. In front of us was an old lady. She was about sixty
years old. Her hair was white and she knotted it untidily at the nape of
her neck. Her face was creased with wrinkles. Her cheeks were sunken
and when she spoke, she revealed her toothless gums. Accidentally, I
brushed against her and apologized. When it was her turn at the cashier,
she felt into her trouser pocket for her wallet. She realized that it was
not there. Without a second thought, she accused me of stealing her
wallet and spewed out a host of vulgarities. I was dumbfounded for a
while.
AII eyes were centred on me.The other shoppers looked at me
quizzically. The situation was chaotic the crowd began to gossip among
themselves.Overwhelmed with intense anger, I spat in reply.
Pandemonium reigned supreme in the shopping mall. The old, feeble
lady seethed with hatred and uttered. “I will bash you up for this!” Those
words incensed me and I retorted, Be my guest!". The burst of anger
hung over us for a moment before the security guard came.

In order to stop the quarrel, the guard conducted a body check and

proved there was nothing in my pocket except my own wallet. I felt
vindicated. However, the unruly woman still accused me as the thief. She
was agitated and infuriated. She surged forward and threatened to beat
me up. It took several hefty men to keep the two of us from each other's
throats. Suddenly, a wallet dropped out from her other pocket. She
picked it up and flipped through it. She seemed to grow more and more
excited and muttered to herself, “It is my wallet!”

An audible silence was heard. Then, the onlookers gossiped again

before dispersing. The old lady was ashamed and colour was drained
from her face. She apologized humbly to me for the misunderstanding
and for uttering the harsh remarks.

After making the payment, we went home. I felt relieved and

wished that such foolish misunderstanding would not happen to me
again!

Narrative essay - A Misunderstanding (B)

No matter how much I tried to reason with him,he simply refused

to listen.Come on…you are my best friend…believe me" l pleaded
desperately, as my heart beat furiously. Alex, the only person I could
trust, shook his head stubbornly and crossed his arms. He shot me a look
that pierced my heart.

“How could you do that?” he said in a huff before stomping away

angrily, with tears welling up in the bottomless pools of his eyes. My
head throbbed painfully and I ran my hand through my messy clump of
hair. How could this happen? Am I going to lose my best friend forever?
These questions haunted me as I recalled the incident that
happened just hours ago.

“Ding! Dong!” The bell rang, signaling that it was recess time.
Pupils rushed out of the classrooms like a pack of hungry wolves, eager
to satisfy their famished stomachs. l quickly gobbled up my meal and let
out an enormous burp that indicated that my stomach was full. Suddenly
I remembered the novel that I had borrowed from the library. It was due
today. l made my way to the classroom immediately.

Upon reaching the classroom, I noticed that a boy was lurking in

my classroom. He looked deathly pale and beads of perspiration trickled
down his sunken cheeks. Like a bolt from the blue, I recognized him.
Tom was notorious for his bad behaviour and rude attitude which only
spelt one word - trouble.

I watched in utmost horror as he ransacked Alex's schoolbag.

Panic crept slowly up my spine and my heart began to plummet
dramatically.

“Should I confront him?” The thought raced through my mind as I

remembered that my Physical Education teacher had called Alex earlier
to brief him about the race he was taking part in.

“Should I catch him? Should I tell the teacher?” l tried to fight the
ache that was rising in my throat as l walked into the classroom.

“What are you doing here?” I bellowed at Tom and placed my

hands on my hips. In a flash, he dashed out of the classroom, carrying a
wad of one-ringgit bills and Alex's Maths workbook I stood rooted the
ground, holding Alex's wallet. Soon, my classmates returned.

Alex was surprised to find me next to his table but he did not
suspect anything amiss. l tried to tell him what had happened but
unfortunately, Mrs Tan, my form teacher, stepped into the class.

When Mrs Tan asked the class to hand in our Maths workbooks
and money Alex's face contorted into different colours He shot me an
angry glare as Mrs Tan reprimanded him for not handing in his
homework and made him stand outside the classroom.
Now, it was already after school. I uttered a silent curse at Tom
and tried once again to reason with Alex.

As Alex finally lent me an ear, Tom rushed to our side, puffing and
panting. Overcome by guilt, he apologized sincerely and returned the
workbook and money. He also admitted his act to Mrs Tan and was
given a heavy punishment. Alex turned to me and smiled.

He apologized and asked me if I would ever forgive him. l

shrugged as he looked down in regret. I put an arm around him and said,
It's just a misunderstanding. I was at the wrong place at the wrong
time!"
