GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE UNIT

This is a beginners course in Entrepreneurship which is intended to incalicate the


necessary skills to make one an entrepreneur. It covers fourteen Topics as Covered in
Fourteen LECTURE SESSIONS that comprise the subject matter of Entrepreneurship
taught at Diploma level. After Week FOUR we incorporate a CAT ONE and After Week
EIGHT we add another CAT TWO.

Course Description

This course aims at providing the learners with entrepreneurship techniques relevant
for survival in the business world. In particular, it exposes learners to areas of
entrepreneurship theory and small enterprise management. The course will mainly
emphasize on the Entrepreneur , Entrepreneurship; the factors to consider when
preparing to become self employed, Entrepreneurs’ Contribution to Development,
Generating of business ideas, Recognition of Business Opportunities, Selection of a
Suitable Market, Business Information & Procedure in Starting a Business,
Characteristics of a Successful Entrepreneur & Self Assessment of Entrepreneurial
Potential, Factors that influence Decision Making, among others.

SESSION ONE: Entrepreneur & Entrepreneurship

Definition of the terms entrepreneur and entrepreneurship; Show their relationship to


self-employment; Types of small businesses.

SESSION TWO: Factors to Be Considered When Preparing to become Self-Employed

Explain the factors to be considered when preparing to become self-employed;


Opportunity cost; Types of businesses; Market; Government Policies; Location;
Resources

SESSION THREE: Entrepreneurs’ Contribution to Development

Identify the Contributions of entrepreneurs to national development; Employment


creation; Local resources; Diversification of business; Promotion of Technology; Capital
Formation; Promotion of an Entrepreneurial Culture

SESSION FOUR: Generation of Business Ideas

Identify potential business ideas that match you interest, training, and experience;
Generating business ideas, sources of ideas

SESSION FIVE: Recognition of Business Opportunities

Be able to recognize and evaluate an appropriate business opportunity; Business


opportunity; Characteristics of a Good Business opportunity; Identification Process for
Business opportunities.

SESSION SIX: Selection of a Suitable Market

Be able to list the procedures in selecting a suitable market for a given product; Market
and customer information; The Marketing concept; Customer needs; ‘5Ws’ ; Analyzing
Competition; preliminary Market Plan.
SESSION SEVEN: Business Information & Procedure in Starting a Business

Be able to collect information useful to starting a given business; Nature of information;


Sources of government Information.

SESSION EIGHT: Characteristics of a Successful Entrepreneur & Self Assessment of


Entrepreneurial Potential

Be able to identify the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs; Outline of


Entrepreneurial Characteristics; Profile of an entrepreneur; Being Entrepreneurial;
Characteristics of an Entrepreneur; Listing of Entrepreneurial traits.

CAT TWO

SESSION NINE: Factors that influence Decision Making

Be able to identify and apply factors that influence decision making in a business; A
genera approach to decision making; Decision Making approaches; Decision Making;
Problem solving chart; Solution Evaluation Form.

SESSION TEN: Coping with Change and Competition

Be able to demonstrate an ability to cope with change and competition in business;


anticipating change and competition; Cultivating readiness for change and competition;
Monitoring change and competition; Evaluating the change and competition.

SESSION ELEVEN: Consideration in Risk taking

Be able to identify the factors considered in risk-taking for a given entrepreneurial


situation; Identifying and Evaluating Risk Taking; the Do’s and Don’ts of Risk taking;
Ring Toss Game.

SESSION TWELVE: Business Financial Records

Be able to understand and use basic financial records; Basic business records;
SESSION THIRTEEN: Interpreting Simple Financial Statements.

Be able to to analyze and interpret simple financial statements; financial statements;


Analysis of Financial Statements; Calculating and using Break-even Point.

SESSION FOURTEEN: Costing and Pricing.

Be able to calculate the cost and price of individual goods and services; Elements of
Costing; The cost of Producing one Product; Pricing for Manufacturers, Traders and
Service.

SESSION FIFTEEN: Revision/Examination

SESSION SIXTEEN: Revision/Examination

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course the student will be able to:

*Define the basic terms in entrepreneurship

*Show their relationships to self-employment

*Identify business Ideas that suit him/her

*Select a suitable market for his/her product/service.

*Keep and interpret simple financial records

*Assess risks in the face of competition.

*Make appropriate decisions in Business


MODE OF STUDY

This course will adopt a blended learning format essentially consists of online learning
modules where a portion of the lecture and reading material will be presented through
videos, and or web conferences, text, and other interactive program formats.

ASSESSMENT

There will be two forms of evaluation: weekly student activities in form of assignments,
Quizzes and CATs and Exam to be taken as per university academic policy.

The weights for each form of assessment are:
