This document presents the research proposal of Group 7 which aims to determine the relationship between the perceived difficulty of specialized subjects (physics and chemistry) and the stress levels of Grade 12 STEM students in Malvar Senior High School. The group seeks to describe the students' stress levels, analyze the relationship between subject difficulty and stress, and propose strategies to reduce student stress. It also provides a literature review discussing several previous studies conducted locally and internationally related to academic stress, anxiety, coping mechanisms, and performance in subjects like mathematics, chemistry, and physics.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the significant relationship between the perceived difficulty on specialized
subject and the stress level experienced by Grade 12 STEM students in Malvar Senior High School.

Specifically, the researchers sought to answer the following:

1. What is the students’ difficulty perception on their specialized subjects:

1.1. Physics
1.2. Chemistry
2. How may the stress level of the respondents be described?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the perceived difficulty of Grade 12 STEM specialized
subjects and students’ stress levels?
4. Based on the findings of the study, what strategies can be proposed to reduce the stress levels
encountered by the students?

predictive of math anxiety. While Dmitri Rozgonjuk, Tiina Kraav, Kristel Mikkor, Kerli Orav-

- Synthesis – (Austria-Cruz et al. 2019) Discussion on the most practical adaptation to preventing
excessive stress in students should be done by training them to improve their analytical skills in
situational settings. Solving both complex and simple problems. Teachers may constantly assist
students in developing a harmonious and professional relationship with them. Previous research
has linked a mastery goal orientation to adaptive learning strategies (e.g., help seeking behavior
and deep processing), whereas a performance-avoidance goal orientation is linked to less
adaptive learning strategies. This study confirms and expands on previous research by
demonstrating that a mastery goal orientation predicts adaptive coping strategies after failure,
whereas a performance-avoidance goal orientation predicts self-protective but maladaptive
strategies.

- Synthesis - More than one-third of all college students report experiencing stress that impacted
their academic performance in the previous academic year (Morey et al. & Taylor et al. 2019),
which may cause a lot of undergraduates. (2020) (Adebisi et al.) The pressure to succeed makes
the academic environment stressful. Excessive stress has been shown in studies to impair
academic performance and lead to dropout. (Mangaoang-Boado et al, 2013) According to the
findings, students will perform better in Physics if they perform better in English and Mathematics,
have a positive attitude toward Physics, and have good study habits. GPA in Math had the
greatest impact on academic performance in Physics among the variables.

- Synthesis - Examinations, subject difficulty, too many contents in a lesson, and making decisions
about tertiary education were the top causes of academic stress (Dapaynos et al., Butala et al., &
Atompag et al. 2021). Furthermore, results showed that Grade 10 and 12 students with lower
grades experienced a higher level of stress than those with higher grades, indicating that there is
a high level of academic stress and exam anxiety. Some students experience academic
psychological problems as a result of academic stress, such as academic pressure, academic
anxiety, academic conflict, and academic frustration in school-related activities. (Austria- Cruz et
al. 2019) The respondents' subject-related academic stress, Requirements completion received
the highest weighted mean (3.68) with a verbal interpretation of the most likely source of stress
This implies that subject-related academic stress can be a factor in students' depression. Levels
of stress that can lead to absenteeism or feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that
impedes effective study habits. Academic achievement is then weakened even further. The
writers in concluded that academic stress not only hinders academic performance, but also an
adaptation to a larger extent. (Deb et al., Strodl et al., Sun et al. 2015) In the current study, 81.6%
of the students, particularly female students from Bengali medium schools who are not proficient
in English, reported examination-related anxiety. Gender was also discovered to be significantly
related to exam-related anxiety and psychiatric caseness. That is, female students have higher
levels of exam-related anxiety and psychiatric caseness than male students. (Sasuya et al. 2019)
Academic stress arises when there is a perception of overwhelming pressure on the students,
which interferes with their academic success. Stress afflicts students' physical health, emotional
welfare, and academic performance. Students develop a nonchalant attitude towards their studies
because of stress.
