Gen Physics Module 5 - Online

This document outlines a module on Newton's Laws of Motion. The module will take place over 8 meetings and 2 weeks. Students will learn to define inertial frames of reference, identify action-reaction pairs, draw free-body diagrams, and apply Newton's Laws to qualitative and quantitative problems involving forces, velocity, acceleration, and motion. The module includes pre-assessment activities, videos, presentations, worked examples, and a summative test to apply what was learned about Newton's Three Laws of Motion.

GENERAL PHYSICS 1
Module 5: Newton’s Law of Motion
Time allotment: 8 meetings/ 2 weeks

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

A. define inertial frames of reference;
B. identify action- reaction pairs;
C. draw free- body diagrams;
D. apply Newton’s 1st law to obtain quantitative and qualitative conclusions about contact
and non- contact forces acting on a body in equilibrium;
E. apply Newton’s 2nd law and kinematics to obtain quantitative and qualitative
conclusions about the velocity and acceleration of one or more bodies, and the contact
and non- contact forces acting on one or more bodies; and
F. solve systematically and analytically problems involving the three laws of motion.

Let’s Learn More About This!

It is common knowledge that the motion of a given body is in one way or another related
to the forces that act upon it. However, for centuries, several philosophers and scientists failed
to establish such a relationship. Although several brilliant men pondered on the problem and
tried to establish a relationship through countless experiments, all efforts were in vain and no
acceptable relationship between the motion of a body and the forces that act upon it was
established.
A breakthrough occurred however in the 17th century when Galileo performed a number
of careful experiments on the motions of bodies. Sir Isaac Newton accepted the conclusion
drawn from the experiments of Galileo and formulated three (3) laws. These laws explain how
objects affected by force behave.

Newton’s Three Laws of Motion

Motion draws our attention. Motion itself can be beautiful, causing us to marvel at the
forces needed to achieve spectacular motion, such as that of a dolphin jumping out of the
water, or a pole vaulter, or the flight of a bird, or the orbit of a satellite. The study of motion is
kinematics, but kinematics only describes the way objects move—their velocity and their
acceleration. Dynamics considers the forces that affect the motion of moving objects and
systems. Newton’s laws of motion are the foundations of dynamics. These laws provide an
example of the breadth and simplicity of principles under which nature functions. They are also
universal laws in that they apply to similar situations on Earth as well as in space. For more
information, read pages 74- 76, 80- 83, 86- 88, 92- 94 of your book.

Activity 2: Applying the Law of Acceleration!

Answer the following worded problems in your notebook. After which, check if your
solutions are correct by opening the PowerPoint presentation on Practice Problems on the Law
of Acceleration.
1. What net force acting on a 14 kg cabinet produces an acceleration of 1.5 m/s 2?
2. A book with a mass of 2.0 kg is pushed along a table. If the net force on the book is
1.0 N, what is the book’s acceleration?
3. A 30 N net force on a skater produces an acceleration of 0.6 m/s2. What is the mass of
the skater?
4. What is the weight of an object accelerated to 6.5 m/s2 by a force of 19 N? Neglect
friction.
