HISTORICAL CONTRIBUTION
D.
Functions is expected to be a significant contributor to the Ext1 exam (our analysis suggests ~9%)
and is the combination of old Ext2, Ext1 and Advanced course materials, plus new content!
This topic has been split into four categories for analysis purposes which are: 1-Graphing (4.9%), 2-
Inequalities (2.1%), 3-Inverse Functions (1.6%) and 4-Parametric Equations (new content).
This analysis looks at Inverse Functions.

HSC ANALYSIS - What to expect and common pitfalls

Inverse Functions (1.6%) in this topic looks at non-trig inverse functions.
This topic has been examined 6 times in the last decade, and notably 4 times in the last 5 years.
Although 2020 contained just a 1-mark multiple choice question, when Inverse Functions has been
tested in the past, significant mark allocations are common - individual questions in 2018, 2012,
2010, 2008, and 2007 received no less that 5 allocated marks!
We note in past years, allocations between this topic and the larger Inverse Trig Functions sub-topic
tend to cannibalise each other.
Pitfalls: The graph and associated range and domain of an inverse exponential function has been
the most poorly answered question type in this area in recent times and deserves attention (see 2018
Adv 13b and 2010 Adv 3b).
