Longpi black pottery
Longpi ( nungbi) pottery from Manipur is made from a mixed paste of ground black
serpentinite stone and special brown clay, which is found only in Longpi village. This
pottery crafted by Tangkhul tribe who reside in Nungbi village
unique feature of this craft is that it is crafted without a potter’s wheel.
The pots are manually shaped, polished, sun-dried and fired in a bonfire
The black color of Longpi ham is a result of polishing the heated
earthen pots with a local tree leaf
This pottery is mainly used for making utensils like water pot,cooker,cups,etc.

Prepration of clay
1. Clean the surface you are going to work on
2. Cover your work surface with newspaper.
3. Take appropriate amount of clay needed from the clay dough
4. Start wedging the clay to remove air bubbles
5. Try to use your palms instead of your fingertips when pushing the clay down
6. check the clay for air bubbles repeat the process of you find any.
7. your clay is ready to use
My experience
At first my experience with clay was really good as it reminded me of how I use
to play with clay when I was little but after that I learnt the difference between
polymer and natural clay.
Natural clay can be really tough to handle sometime.we have to control the
amount of moisture present in the clay in order to molde it easily and without
cracks which was a big task for me .
pinching was the easiest and using slabs was the most difficult one for me
