CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

1.0 Introduction

Internet is a global communicative network, and a very complex and

revolutionary invention of 1965 that changed the world. Through this invention,
internet makes it possible to communicate with other people around the world,
watch videos, play games and especially it can help you quickly find information
that you need. Thus, this study aims to define the impact of internet dependency
to the selected Grade-12 students of San Benito National High School.

It has been considered in the past that internet gives a disadvantageous

impact to the concerned individuals. As Tracy (2008) says that it is a compulsive
behaviour that completely dominates the addicts’ life. Internet addicts make the
internet a priority more important than family, friends, and work. They are willing
to sacrifice what they cherish most in order to preserve and continue their
unhealthy behaviour. Similarly, Akin-Adramola (2014) validated that internet is
used by secondary through chatting, downloading, watching videos online,
playing online games, and online shopping that may also result to decrease
critical thinking and analysis on intellectual laziness and students cannot create a
consistent writing that can lead to internet dependency.

Students in this generation are born with the existence of the internet. But
not all who used the internet are classified as internet dependents. Research has
explored the possible impact of Internet Dependency on the academic
performance to the students, yet the case of San Benito National High School
had not yet been studied in depth.

1
In this study, a social investigation will be conducted among Grade-12
students of San Benito National High School. It is hoped that fundamental
matters and concerns of the problem of internet dependency in the school will be
addressed.

Review of Related Literature

Academic performance has been the goal of every student in this

generation; that is, have good grades in school. For some, having good
performance and good grades will help one achieve his ambitions and fulfils his
goals in life someday.

According to Kapur (2018), the academic performance determines the

future goals and objectives of students. What subject they will specialize in
colleges and universities, which educational institutions they will get enrolled into,
what career opportunities they would take up and so forth.

Lamas (2015) states that several authors agree that academic

performance is the results of learning, prompted by the teaching activity by the
teacher and produced by the students. From a humanistic approach, Martinez
(2007) states that academic performance is the product given by the students
and it is usually expressed through their grades in school.

According to the article Introduction to Internet, internet is becoming quite

popular for accessing information on any topic of your interest. It also provides
tremendous opportunities to students, researchers, professionals for getting
information on matters related to academic and professional topics and lot more.
In the present world, most of the people who have computers around themselves
use internet to access information from the world wide web, exchange messages
& documents and e-services.

As Asghari (2018) says that thode who are addicted to the Internet,
experience negative consequences of it,such as feeling of loneliness and
isolation, and a vicious circle as well as a bilateral relationship involved.

While internet has been helping us nowadays Kubey et al., (2001) states
that the internet can, however, be overused and many students have become
dependent on the internet, which in turn has led to poor academic performance.

However, due to advancements in technology and access to information,

mostly college students also have greater resources available to help them

2
broaden their knowledge; hence students in this present time usually have
positive impressions of the internet and the use of technology with regard to
online and blended learning environments. (Shaw, 2009)
