Omitted Measurements Lec1

The document discusses omitted measurements that occur during surveying when certain measurements like lengths or bearings cannot be recorded in the field, typically due to obstacles. It provides three cases of omitted measurements: 1) those involving a single side, 2) those involving two adjoining sides, and 3) those involving two non-adjoining sides. Examples and problems are given for each case to show how analytical methods can be used to determine the unknown measurements and complete the survey data.

Omitted measurements

Sometimes it becomes very difficult to measure all bearing and measurements due to field condition
like a river or some other obstacles and for this some reading may be omitted. These missing
quantities may be determined analytically to obtain a complete set of notes for the traverse as long as
they do not exceed two in number.

Since there is calculation become hard, it is very important to know the theory of omitted
measurements in the surveying.

Cases for omitted measurement

There is some common types of omitted measurement in closed traverse that is as follow.
1. Omitted Measurements are in One Side

CASE 1: Length and Bearing of One Side Unknown

2. Omitted Measurements Involving Two Adjoining Sides

CASE 1: Length of One Side and Bearing of Another Side Unknown
CASE 2: Lengths of Two Sides Unknown
CASE 3: Bearing of Two Sides Unknown
3. Omitted Measurements Involving Two Non-Adjoining Sides
CASE 1: Length of One Side and Bearing of Another Side Unknown
CASE 2: Lengths of Two Sides Unknown
CASE 3: Bearing of Two Sides Unknown

1. Omitted Measurements are in One Side

Problem 1:
Given the following sketch and tabulated data for a closed traverse. Determine the length and bearing
of the unknown side FA.

LINE LENGTH (m) BEARING

AB 725 N 76O E
BC 600 N 25O W
CD 415 S 60O W
DE 510 N 57O W
EF 395 S 32O W
FA ------- --------

Problem 2:
The data for the tract of land is given the accompanying tabulation. The whole tract is supposed to be
divided into three smaller parts, however, the length and bearing of the dividing lines CH and DG
have not been observe in the field. Assuming that the observed data are correct and without error,
compute the length and bearing of the dividing lines.

2. Omitted Measurements Involving Two Adjoining Sides
